Merrill Dean Nelson, 91 of Ormond Beach, FL passed away February 9, 2022. Known to most as Dean, he was a life-long resident of Volusia County and a semi-retired attorney with offices in Daytona Beach for the past 62 years. He received his 50-year membership certificate from the Florida Bar in 2008. He graduated from Mainland High School in 1948 and then graduated from the University of Florida with a Business Administration degree. After graduating from the University, he entered the US Air Force for two years as a Second Lt. through its ROTC program, serving in Korea and Okinawa. After his discharge he entered Stetson Law School graduating in 1958. He practiced law with a law firm in Ocala for two years, then moving back to his hometown area in 1960. He was a sole practitioner at the same location until his death.
Dean was a kind-hearted family man. He loved to reminisce about his world travels. Over the years he enjoyed many fishing trips on the St. John’s River as well as weekends at his beachfront condo with his family in Satellite Beach. He also enjoyed cooking (especially BBQ) and was a true Florida Gators fan.
In addition to his wife Patricia of 63 years, Dean is survived by his daughter Jennifer Poorbaugh (Steve) of Indian Harbour Beach, grandchildren Laura (Ben) and Connor. Also son Brian (Lori) of Ormond By the Sea and grandchildren Emily and Nicholas.
Dean’s favorite quote about life was “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened”. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Halifax Health Hospice, 235 Booth Road, Ormond Beach, FL 32174
