Mary was a third-generation native Floridian and lifelong resident of Volusia County. She lived most of her life in Daytona Beach before moving to DeLand in 2000.
Mary was a part of the eight-member graduating class at St. Paul’s Catholic High School in 1947. She subsequently attended Barry College (now Barry University) in Miami, Florida, where she studied business administration and took Dominican vows. After returning to her hometown, Mary joined the Palmetto Club Juniors.
Mary served as an Administrative Assistant at Daytona Beach Federal Savings and Loan for more than 16 years. She was a member of the Halifax Medical Center Auxiliary, the Golden Girls, participated in Marriage Encounter, and served as Secretary for the Orlando Deanery. In addition to her community involvement, Mary was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother (“Nana”), sister, and aunt.
Mary was a parishioner at both St. Paul’s and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Churches in Daytona Beach. At Our Lady of Lourdes, she was a member of the Women’s Club. Since retiring to DeLand, Mary attended St. Peter’s Catholic Church.
Mary is survived by her son, Robert E. Bodnar, Jr.; his wife, Roberta; three grandsons--John, Michael, and Danny; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Robert E. Bodnar, Sr.; her brothers, John Patrick Barrett, Sr., and Raymond Dalton Barrett; her Yorkshire Terrier, Sophie; and her Sheltie, Heather.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday October 14, 2017 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, Ormond Beach, FL. Father Tom Connery will preside over Mass. Interment will follow at Volusia Memorial Park, Ormond Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the building fund at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in DeLand.
