James "Syd" Crosby

Mr. James “Syd” Crosby, 74 of Ormond Beach, passed away Tuesday, June 20, 2017. Mr. Crosby was born December 26, 1942 in Jacksonville, FL to the late James Otha and Ellouise (Pickett) Crosby. Syd was a lifelong resident of Volusia and Flagler Counties and a graduate of Mainland High School. He managed stores for Publix in Satellite Beach, Eau Gallie Causeway and Roosevelt Mall in Jacksonville, FL, and retired after 16 years of service. He was the owner operator of Mac’s Grocery Store on Seabreeze in Daytona Beach fulfilling a dream of owning his own store. After selling Mac’s, he bought land in Flagler County and built Crosby’s Grocery Market where all four of his sons worked with him and their mother at the store for 22 years. Syd then served the people of Flagler County as a County Commissioner and as the Flagler County Clerk of Court before he retired and moved back to the Daytona Beach area. He was a member of the Volusia Masonic Lodge No. 77 F&AM. Syd also served in the U.S, Navy.

He will be remembered as a loving Husband, Father, and Grandfather. Survivors are his wife of 53 years, Beverly Woodfin Crosby of Ormond Beach, sons, Syd Crosby (Lisa) of Gainesville, Jay Crosby (Sandra) of Ormond Beach, Ken Crosby (Tara) of Jonesborough, TN, and W.W. Crosby (Jaime) of Hampton, VA, as well as 8 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 24, 2017 at 12 Noon at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home, 548 Nova Road, Ormond Beach, FL 32174, with Rev. Mark Spivey officiating. The family will hold a visitation from 11:00 a.m. until the start of the service. Burial will follow at Pilgrims Rest Cemetery.
