.Dorothy “Jean” Simpson Smith, 90, passed away on April 21, 2017, at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach, FL. Jean was born March 18, 1927 in New Smyrna, FL, to F.W. and Sally Simpson. She graduated from Mainland High School in 1945. She then went to Florida State College for Women for a quarter before eloping with her high school sweetheart, Glenn “Smitty” Smith November 12, 1945. They were married 71 years and had 3 children together. Jean was a stay at home mom for many years, then worked as a secretary in the local university system where she retired in 1987. Jean loved spending time with her family, cooking, golfing and playing the piano. She is survived by her husband, Glenn “Smitty” Smith, Port Orange, FL, son Glenn Smith, Jr (Susie),daughter Ginny Wiley-Sylvia (Don), and her 5 grandchildren, Andrea Wiley, Denise Collins (Mike), Glenn “Trey” Smith, III (Mary Wells), , Michelle Ethridge Smith, Lynn Doyle (Shane), 10 great grandchildren Amanda Gamache (Fred), Jessica Pryor, Winter Williams, Jessie Collins, Fiona Smith, Glenn ”G” Smith IV, Kasey Kucera, Riley Doyle, Sam Doyle, and Payton Smith, great, great grandchildren Madison and Gabriel Gamache, nieces and nephews, Edward “Butch” Simpson (Myriam), Chuck Simpson (Janie), Michelle Smith (Craig), Jay Smith (Pat), Danielle McCranie (Dan), Doc Jones (Doris Ann). She is preceded in death by her son/daughter in law Wayne and Cindy, her parents, and her 7 siblings - Ruby, Margaret, Mary, Edgar, Buster, Harry, and twin sister Joy. She is also survived by one sister-in-law, Cookie Simpson. Her family and friends will always remember her for her faith in God, which gave her the strength to be our “rock” and our “glue”. It was those qualities that kept us all “together” as family. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Jean’s life 11:00 am Saturday, April 29, 2017, at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home 548 N. Nova Road Ormond Beach with Rev. Mark Spivey officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00am-11:00am.
