Eastham- Virginia D. (Stetson) Haller, 83 passed away following a brief illness on October 14, 2021. Fondly known as Gini, she was born in Boston on June 27, 1938 to the late Jon and Florence (Nelson) Stetson. She grew up on the South Shore until the family relocated to Portsmouth,NH. Inspired by her aunt and encouraged by her parents, Gini chose to become a nurse and graduated from Mount Auburn Hospital School of Nursing. It was during one of her hospital affiliations where by fate she met the love of her life and best friend, George.
Following her graduation, Gini and George were married on October 24, 1959. They lived for a brief time in Oakdale, MA before settling in Northampton, MA. Here they became a family of five, began many lifelong friendships and Western MA was "home" for more than 30 years!
During this time, Gini continued her nursing career on a part-time basis to be home for their children. As a Registered Nurse, she worked flexible hours in various care settings. She worked at Cooley Dickinson Hospital, Lathrop Home and the Easthampton VNA. Her position as a visiting nurse was one she enjoyed most and stayed with the longest. She felt fortunate to have had the opportunity to care for so many patients and families and believed they recovered often times quicker in the comfort of their own environment with continuity of care and the support of loved ones.
After having spent every summer family vacation on the Cape, it was their desire to someday live there. In 1993, Gini and George realized their dream and began their next chapter of semi-retirement in Eastham. Gini continued on with the VNA of Cape Cod for twenty-two more years, officially retiring in 2016. She was a familiar face to many local residents at blood pressure screenings and flu clinics-having administered a bit of prevention to thousands of Lower Cape residents each year!
Gini was an active member of First Baptist Church-First Churches, Northampton and continued her involvement when they joined Brewster Baptist Church. Her passion in caring for others facilitated the Parish Nursing Ministry of which she co-chaired, Cooks Who Care and Fellowship Committees. She enjoyed knitting prayer shawls to give and baby sweaters for the annual fair with her "Needlers" group.
Gini served as a church delegate for the American Baptist Church of MA (TABCOM) supporting mission work locally and beyond. She was a faithful volunteer for a number of years at Katy's Korner, a part of Lower Cape Outreach Council, their mission to provide assistance to those in immediate need of food, clothing or financial support.
Gini and George loved to travel with family and friends visiting Europe, Nova Scotia, Alaska, Hawaii, Florida and Bermuda, as well as several National Parks. Some of her happiest times were with her family, especially her grandchildren. She looked forward to summer as she knew her home would be abound with the company of her family and friends. Her childhood memories of the Cape became those of her children and grandchildren- memories we will always treasure.
Gini leaves her husband, George. This month, they would have celebrated their sixty-second Wedding Anniversary. She also leaves her daughter, Robin Walker and son-in-law Richard, son Jon and daughter-in-law Joanna, son Matthew and daughter-in-law Lesli; her eight grandchildren, Sean Walker, Caitlin Courtney and her husband Tom, Shane, Elizabeth and Julia Haller, Jack, Sara and Emily Haller, her sister Deborah and brother-in-law Rick, her sister-in-law Ellie, her nephews, nieces, cousins and many dear friends, she thought of as family.
Gini's family would like to extend their gratitude to VNA of Cape Cod, Eastham Council on Aging and Cape Cod Hospital for the wonderful care and support they provided.
A Memorial Service will be held on November 9, 2021 at 11:00 am at Brewster Baptist Church.
