Mary Jane Miller-Puckett "Dinny"

Mary Jane Miller-Puckett of East Orleans, Massachusetts, passed away on November 25th with her two daughters by her side. She was 90. “MJ” was loved and admired by many who benefited from her kind heart and wonderful spirit.

Mary Jane was born on February 25, 1932, in New York City to Alice (Brevoort) White and Donald M. White. She spent her childhood summers in Silver Bay on Lake George and Chatham eventually making Cape Cod her home where she was a full-time resident for over 40 years.

She graduated from Scarsdale High School, attended Lasalle Jr. College in Newton MA, and Tobé Coburn School in New York City, where she started her retail career. While working in New York City, she met Russell Miller, and they were married on May 18, 1957. Russ and Mary Jane enjoyed 20 wonderful years of marriage and had two daughters. They lived in Connecticut, Philadelphia, and Ohio making many lasting memories and friendships along the way. Russ passed away in January 1977.

Mary Jane moved to Harwich Port in the early eighties and became a full-time resident of Cape Cod. In 1999 at a Super Bowl Party, cupid struck a second time, and she married Robert “Bob” Puckett on June 19, 2004. They shared 17 years together. She was predeceased by Bob 11 months ago.

She was an active volunteer in the Junior League, her community, and her church. She was bright, thoughtful, a terrific mother, a wonderful grandmother, and loved to have fun. She had a noble spirit and remarkable resilience; always looking out for others and willing to help when needed.

Mary Jane will be most remembered for being a true lady. She loved entertaining and was a master at finding a good bakery. Hair appointments were a top priority and she always looked impeccable. She was a dedicated New England Patriots fan and you never wanted to call her on a Sunday when the Patriots were playing.

She was affectionately known as “Dinny” to her four grandchildren; a nickname she acquired when she was young. She loved being a grandmother and was very good at it. Each grandchild was extra-special to her, and she enjoyed being part of their lives.

Mary Jane is remembered with love by her family, daughters Alison Estes (Paul), Pinehurst NC, and Leslie Herlin (Robert), Hobe Sound, FL, grandchildren Colleen Estes, Andrea Estes, Bowden Herlin and Hugh Herlin, brother Peter White, Los Angeles CA and sister and brother-in-law Marilyn and Richard Ellis, San Antonio, TX. She was predeceased by her brother, Brevoort White, and her cousin Jan McDonough.

She had incredible friends, neighbors, a team of devoted caregivers, and a longtime friend Doug Karn, who was like a son to her. We thank them all.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Mary Jane will be held at Pilgrim Congregational Church on Route 28 in Harwich Port on Saturday, February 11, 2023 at 10:00 am. Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Harwich.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in her honor to The Family Pantry of Cape Cod or The American Cancer Society.
