Marcelle W. Farrington

Eastham, MA - Marcelle Ward Farrington passed away on September 25, 2016 - her son, Brian, was at her side. She was the daughter of the late Ruby (Hartman) and Bowden Ward. Born in Kingwood, WV on June 30, 1925. Marcelle attended Kingwood schools and was president of her senior class. She graduated from West Virginia University in 1948 with a degree in Journalism. After graduating, she reported for the Charleston Gazette (WV) and the Fairmont West Virginian before moving to New York City and working for Time and Fortune magazines. After meeting her husband (Charles A. Farrington, deceased) in New York City and moving to Massachusetts, Marcelle reported for the Lawrence Eagle-Tribune and later became the editor of the Andover Townsman.

Later in her career Marcelle was a senior executive responsible for national public relations and financial communications for two major financial services companies: John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company and Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada. In 1976, Marcelle received the P.I. Reed award for journalism from West Virginia University for her career accomplishments. At the time of her retirement, she was the Director of Public Relations & Communications for Sun Life. She also served on the Public Relations Society of America's national board of directors and local Boston chapter.

Marcelle moved to Eastham, MA in 1991 and during her retirement she was a member and past public relations chairman of the Cape Cod Chapter of the Service Corps of Retired Executives, a member of the Cape Cod Jazz Society and wrote occasional articles for the Cape Cod Times, focusing on local small businesses. Marcelle volunteered for Eastham Windmill Weekend and her hobbies included travel, photography, cooking and entertaining family and friends.

Marcelle is survived by her son Brian (Suzanne) Farrington of Rochester, MA. She was predeceased by her son, Ward, of Winthrop, MA. The family will celebrate her life with friends at a later date.
