Kay Cassill

Kay Cassill, a celebrated artist and writer, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2024, at her cherished home in Truro, Cape Cod, as the sun rose on a spectacular autumn day, in Kay's own words, "A.B.D.I.T. Another Beautiful Day in Truro." She was 93 years old, just weeks shy of her 94th birthday. Even in her final days, Kay remained active and engaged, planning to attend the funeral of a dear friend and former sorority sister. Her son Orin was by her side during her final moments. Her mind was sharp, and her spirit vibrant, reflecting a life lived with passion and purpose.

Born in 1930 as an identical twin, Kay shared a special bond with her sister Marilyn, a connection that deeply influenced her life and work. She graduated with honors in English from the University of Iowa's Writers' Workshop but soon found her true calling in the visual arts. Immersed in the vibrant art scene of Greenwich Village, she mingled with avant-garde painters who shaped her artistic vision.

Kay's passion for art took her to Paris for postgraduate studies at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. Her European journey included time in Bandol on the Riviera and travels through Carrara, Florence, and Rome, where she married fellow artist and writer R.V. Cassill.

Upon returning to the United States, she continued her artistic development at the New School in New York and later at the University of Iowa with renowned printmaker Mauricio Lasansky and painter James Lechay. A dedicated lifelong learner, she also participated in workshops with Karen Blackwood, Donna Zagotta, and Mel Stabin.

Known for her intense focus on ideas and love of mystery, Kay was a studio painter deeply rooted in Figurative Expressionism. Her work spanned various mediums, including oil, watermedia on Yupo, and intaglio prints. She was celebrated for capturing the human figure with bold and expressive assurance, often drawing inspiration from mythology, memories, and everyday life.

Her art was exhibited nationally and internationally, including shows in Oslo, Norway, and across the United States. Her works are part of permanent collections at esteemed institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the University of Iowa Art Museum, and the Springfield Museum of Art in Missouri. Kay was a Signature Member of the Michigan Watercolor Society, Northwest Watercolor Society, and Illinois Watercolor Society.

An accomplished writer, Kay authored several books and numerous articles. Her book "Twins: Nature's Amazing Mystery" explored the biological, psychological, and emotional aspects of twinship, shedding light on the profound connections and mysteries that define this special relationship.

Kay was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Verlin (R.V. Cassill). She is survived by her 3 children and their spouses, her 8 grandchildren and their spouses, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Family and friends remember Kay for her warmth, wisdom, and the joy she brought into their lives. As they gather in her beloved Cape house, surrounded by her and Verlin's artwork, they celebrate the legacy of a woman whose creativity and love touched many.

A memorial service will be held at Nickerson Funeral Home in Orleans, MA, where all who knew her are welcome to honor her memory. Another memorial service will be held in Saline, Michigan at a date to be determined.

Her spirit will continue to inspire and live on in the hearts of those she touched.

Karilyn Kay Cassill, age 93, of Truro, Massachusetts passed away on Saturday, October 12, 2024. Karilyn was born in Des Moines, Iowa. A more formal obituary will be available shortly. An hour of visitation will be held on Thursday, October 17, 2024 from 10 - 11 AM with a service in her honor will be held in the funeral home beginning at 11:00 AM. Kay's committal service will conclude at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Truro where she will be laid to rest next to her husband Ronald.
