Joan attended grade school and high school in Rutherford, New Jersey, graduating with honors from Rutherford High School. She attended Cornell University, and graduated with a degree in history in 1955.
Joan was an avid traveler, and always curious to learn about the countries and people she was travelling to. Her travel adventures took her early on to Russia, China, Spain and Egypt. In her later years, she and her sister Kathy traveled extensively to Europe and beyond.
Joan loved playing tennis, especially playing doubles with new friends. Joan's main passion was her wonderful garden. She had the most beautiful roses and dahlias, her garden was always stunning.
Joan worked initially at Radio Free Europe, but spent the bulk of her career teaching Social Studies at John F. Kennedy High School in New York City. She later ran a program counselling students, many of them poor, in getting into college.
After retirement, Joan was very active in Eastham civic affairs. She was a member of the Eastham Historical Society and the Eastham Ocean Beach Project. In addition, she cared for her mother in her final years.
Joan is survived by her beloved sister, Katherine Alimanestianu, brother Thomas F. Sullivan, and nieces, Susan Sullivan, Jennifer Cicciu, and Catherine Sullivan, and great nephew Tommy Cicciu.
Services will be held at a later date. A Celebration of Joan's life will be scheduled during the Summer.
