Henri Prosper Ozon passed away peacefully surrounded by family on the morning of September 26, 2024. Henri was a man of integrity, devoted to his family and church. Always the charming gentleman, he loved music and dancing. Henri was born March 22, 1932, in St. Pierre et Miquelon, France, where he worked as a banker until he and his parents and six younger siblings moved to the United States in 1952. He was a proud U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War where he served with U.S. forces in Germany.
After earning his U.S. citizenship in service to the nation, Henri returned to his family home in Orleans, MA and worked as a wireless communications technician at the French Cable Station. After meeting the former Jeanne Rioux, the two married and raised four children in Orleans. During their early married life, Henri developed a custom-building and real estate business relying on Jeanne’s expert accounting skills to manage the business. Both Henri and Jeanne obtained their real estate licenses. They dedicated themselves to raising their family and supporting their first parish of St. Joan of Arc.
Henri purchased and developed land adjacent to Our Lady of the Cape Church in Brewster, MA, which he named Dillingham Heights. Shortly after, Henri and Jeanne took their four children to live in France for a year, to learn the French language and culture. The family returned from France on the last voyage of the SS France, no surprise given Henri’s lifelong passion for ships and the sea.
Henri was a man of faith and a devoted communicant of Our Lady of the Cape Catholic Church in Brewster where he served as an usher for many decades and loved distracting the children. Henri also enjoyed daily Mass at St. Joan of Arc Church in Orleans and at Holy Trinity in Harwich. Henri treasured his relationships with many dear friends and the dozens of families and businesses he protected in his home security business.
Henri is preceded in death by his parents Clement and Louise, wife Jeanne, sister Genevieve, brothers Clement (Maria) and Michael, sister-in-law Maria, and brother-in-law William and survived by his brothers Lucien (Kay) of Orleans and Roger (Nell) of St. John’s Newfoundland, and sister Jeanne (William) of Seaford, Delaware and Orleans, four children, Elizabeth Wolf (Francois) of Austin, TX; Jacqueline Smith (Stephen) of Yarmouth Port, MA; Christine Claireaux of Orleans, MA and Daniel Ozon of Sherbrooke, Quebec. Henri was a devoted grandfather to Anna, Maria, Luise, Jeremi, Anais and Maximilien, and adoring great grandfather to Lena, Cameron, Ellie and Emma, as well as uncle to many cherished nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff at Broad Reach/Liberty Commons in Chatham, MA for their years of dedicated and concerned care.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 3, from 9:00-10:00 a.m. at Nickerson Funeral Home in Orleans, MA. The Funeral Mass will follow at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Church in Orleans, MA. The burial with military honors will be held on Friday, October 4, at 10:45 a.m. at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations in Henri’s name be made to either Our Lady of the Cape Church in Brewster, St. Joan of Arc Church in Orleans, or the French Cable Station Museum in Orleans.
