Donald was born to Alphonce and Dorothy Walwer on Sept 20 1930. Like many children of that time, his was a challenging childhood and he was forced to move several times and live with extended family members. A majority of his youth was spent in the Worcester Ma area.
Donald spent 20 yrs in the Mass State Police where he became very well known for his straight forward, black and white, right and wrong style of handling situations. After retiring, he served as the Chief of Police in Wellfleet Ma for a short time. He was very active in local marine businesses having owned and operated the charterboat Terry II in Orleans Ma for over 40 yrs. He operated several private yachts and commercial tour boats in Naples Fl. He was a marine surveyor and was instrumental in the establishment of the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMS) serving both as its president and on the BOD. He was very active in local town, church and marine organizations serving in numerous volunteer capacities.
The stories of his life's activities, incidents, contributions, unwavering dedication to helping others, including saving many a life are local folklore, (some might say legend). He was lucky to have lived in an era that fostered one to simply do what is right regardless of what is today judged by "political correctness".
He is survived by his wife of 70 plus yrs Theresa, his three children Gary Walwer, Patty Caron, Marcia Schwartz, their spouses, and a small tribe of grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his oldest son Michael.
His Funeral Mass will be held at St Joan of Arc Church, Orleans on June 26 at 11 am, with a celebration of life to follow at the Eastham Elks Club, Eastham from 1pm to 5pm. Details, a memory book, and guestbook can be found at the Nickerson Funeral Home website: www.nickersonfunerals.com
