ORLEANS, MA. David B. Chandler, aged 83, died from a stroke on December 31, 2020. He is survived by his wife Susan Meyers Chandler and son Michael; his sister-in-law Gail Meyers Lavin; niece Caroline Bennett and her children Emily and Matthew Shera and nephew, Robert Sharman.
David was born in Hamilton, Ontario. He received his BA and MA from McMaster University and his Ph.D. from Cornell University. He taught sociology at the University of Hawaii (U.H) for 35 years and served as the Director of the University’s Program on Conflict Resolution. He retired in 2003.
David loved teaching. He was an avid volunteer mediator with the Mediation Center of the Pacific for over 25 years and was a founding member of its predecessor, the Neighborhood Justice Center of Hawaii. He developed the Hawaii model of mediation diagram which is still used as an educational tool in the training of thousands of mediators across Hawaii. He was known for his patience, humor, great listening skills and calm demeanor.
David was also a talented potter and woodworker. He enjoyed playing tennis on Jonathan Moore’s Brickhill Road Tennis Court with a wonderful group of “old people.” He became the grand master of game scheduling.
