Dr. Robert "Bob" W. Young MD

Young, Robert (Bob) W. M.D., 89 peacefully passed early April 14, 2010 after suffering a stroke. He now joins the love of his life, Aileen Carney Young, to whom he was married for 58 years and for whom he has mourned since her passing in 2008. Dr. Young was born on December 15, 1920 in Cincinnati, Ohio to George and Gladys Young and lived there until the family moved to Daytona Beach where grew up and attended school. In Daytona, he was an outstanding student, never making any grade other than an A. He graduated from Seabreeze High School at the age of 15 as Salutatorian of his class. While growing up in Daytona, he was an avid surfer with his 13 foot authentic Hawaiian surf board, which he continued to enjoy with his children. He then attended the University of Florida where he excelled in his studies while being a member of the Gator Marching Band playing saxophone and was an active member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. After graduating with high honors, he attended and graduated John Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore, Maryland, where he met his future bride Claire Aileen Carney. Before marrying Aileen, he served our country as a medical doctor attaining the rank of Captain in the U.S. Army. After marrying Aileen on June 24, 1950, he completed his orthopedic residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. He and Aileen then moved to Orlando in 1951 to begin his career and start a family. He was the second orthopedic surgeon to come to Orlando. He opened his sole practice in 1952 at 1225 South Orange Avenue where he provided his patients with unparalleled care until he retired in 1992. He was known for his warmth, sympathy and understanding in attending to the needs of all patients. He was on staff at Florida Hospital, Mercy Hospital, Lucerne Hospital, West Orange Memorial Hospital and Orlando Regional Medical Center (formerly Orange Memorial Hospital). He was recognized as an accomplished surgeon, board certified in orthopedics, a member of the American Medical Association, the Southern Medical Association, the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons, The Eastern Orthopedic Association, The Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons,the Florida Medical Society and the Orange County Medical Society. He took pride in mentoring and training many interns and orthopedic residents who are practicing orthopedic surgeons today. He had a keen interest in sports and sports medicine serving as the team physician for Boone High School football team, the Lake Highland Preparatory School football team, the Stetson University tennis team, the Orlando Twins professional baseball team, and the Orlando Panthers professional football team. He was an avid handball player winning many single and double competions in local tournaments. He was a loving and dedicated husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his son, Terry C. Young (Linda), daughter, Dianne Y. Davila (Robert), 4 grandchildren, Logan J. Young (age 31), Lawson J. Young (age 29), Holly P. Davila (age 24) and Matthew R. Davila (age 11), as well as his brother, Judge George C. Young (Iris). A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Orlando on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donation be made to the Orlando Health Foundation (3160 South Gate Commerce Blvd. Suite 50, Orlando, Florida 32806).
