She was born in St. Ann, Jamaica, the seventh of twelve children to Luke and Mabel (Kelly) Atterbury. She is survived by siblings Luke, Glenn, and Thelma Atterbury; nephews Patrick and Tony Payne; niece Fay Smickle; several grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and close friends, Norma Uter, and Loren & Lisa Sauers.
After working as a psychiatric nurse in Jamaica, Cynthia moved to England in 1964 to study nursing and midwifery. Upon graduation she worked in England for a few years. She returned to Jamaica briefly, and then migrated to the United States of America. She initially lived and worked in New York, and in 1980 relocated to Orlando, Florida. There, she met and married her beloved husband Samuel Young, who preceded her in death.
Cynthia was a caring, dynamic, progressive, and generous person. She loved cooking and gardening, and her homes were meticulously maintained. She gave generously to her family, church, and friends. A committed Christian and churchgoer, Cynthia participated actively in the choir church and other activities.
Cynthia valued education, as evidenced by her life’s achievements, and was particularly proud of the graduation of her grand-nieces, Onay and Asha Payne, from Harvard and Columbia Universities respectively. She read extensively, especially her Bible and the writings of Dr. Charles Stanley. She also enjoyed listening to Christian music.
