John Frederick Martz, 58, was called home on Thursday, February 2, 2011 after a prolonged illness. Known to those who love him as “Johnny” or “Johnny Angel”, he was born November 9, 1953 to Phyllis Gene (Martz) Knopp and Richard Allen Martz in Toledo. John graduated from Woodward High School and built a career spanning almost 40 years in HVAC, controls and hands-on engineering as a member of Local 50.
He was truly gifted with the ability to build or fix almost anything mechanical when he wasn’t busy cooking, gardening, fishing, boating, hunting, playing cribbage or playing a variety of sports. His smile and laugh were contagious, especially when delivering his signature jokes or watching you savor his famous chicken wings or holiday meal.
John is survived by his loving wife, Donna Martz, son Nicholas John Martz of whom he was especially proud, step-children Kory Mitchell, Whitney (Rick) Heyward and Chase (Crystal Hernandez) Mitchell, grandchildren Addy and Alex Heyward, Brooklynn Hernandez and Braxton Mitchell, mother Phyllis Knopp, siblings Carol (Dimitri) Kadugurani, Linda Martz, Jerry (Kris) Martz, Melody (John) D’Anniballe, Lisa (Mike) McQueary, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Martz and big brother, Bill Tuck.
Visitation will be Tuesday, February 7th at Hoeflinger-Bolander Funeral Home, 3500 Navarre Ave Oregon, Ohio 43616 from 3pm – 8pm followed by a memorial service Wednesday, February 8th at 2:00 pm. Memorial donations may be made to Big Brothers Big Sisters of NW Ohio.
