Stephen Carroll Peaytt Tatgenhorst, age 74, born in Parkersburg, West Virginia, passed away on Monday, 11 January 2020. He was a graduate of Brilliant High School in 1964 and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Physical Education in 1969 from High Point College. He further continued his education by obtaining his Master’s, 1982 and Specialist Degree in 1986 from Nova University, Broward County, Florida.
Steve began his successful basketball career at Brilliant High School, being a dominant big man in Ohio High School competition, starting every game. He was considered one of the top players in the State which cultivated in Associated Press All Ohio basketball honors his Senior year. Steve was a three time Most Valuable Player. While receiving a full ride college basketball scholarship from High Point College, Steve was part of some of the winningest teams in school history. During his time at High Point College, the Panthers reached the NAIA National Tournament in two of his seasons. Steve and his teammates were honored in 1999 as High Point’s “best team ever”. He was able to attend the ceremony and was honored to give the 1999 team a pep talk about High Point’s glory days in basketball. After graduation, Steve began his teaching and coaching career at Sumner Southern Guilford High School. He had the pleasure of coaching three sport stars, Ralph Brown, speedster Larry Pass and Player of the Year, Killis Rollins. He furthered his teaching and coaching career at Taylor-Dewitt High School in Pierson Florida. Several years after Steve’s retirement, he was inducted into the Taylor High School Athletics Hall of Fame.
Steve is survived by his four children, Stephenie Hagerman of North Carolina, Amber Fulbright of Missouri, Chance Tatgenhorst of Florida and Brittany Lowenstein of Missouri. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Zachary Hagerman, Hunter Hagerman, Andrew Murdock, Dayne Murdock, Aubrie Murdock, Haize Tatgenhorst, Ella Lowenstein, Harrison Lowenstein, Rosamund Lowenstein. A family viewing only will take place Friday 15 January 2020.
Steve’s children would like to express their appreciation to Steve’s closest friends, Tommy Morris, Dave Stowers and Kevin Smith. Additionally, they would like to express their appreciation and gratitude to Hospice. And, a very special and heartfelt thank you to his nurse and former student, Carissa Shelton-Coleman.
