Richard Phillip Bishop, Sr., 83 years old, of Mansfield, Ohio, passed away on July 2, 2024, at Country Meadow Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Bellville. He was born in Mansfield, on September 4, 1940, to the late Hazel (Wilson) and Orlando Irvin Bishop.
He was a proud veteran of the Army and graduated in 1959 from Springfield Township High School. Richard loved playing basketball and was a great athlete in track, earning his varsity letter at “The Shoe”. He was employed at Mansfield Tire and later at Merillat Industries. Richard loved working on cars, was a “Mr. Fix It” and enjoyed fixing anything he could.
Richard enjoyed singing in the church choir and meeting with the alumni of his school. He was respectful of first responders, often making time to shake their hands and thank them for their service. He especially enjoyed being Santa at the Richland Carrousel, as well as being Santa in the Mansfield Christmas parade. He loved animals and was a big OSU fan.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon (Wolfrom) Bishop; children, Richard P. Bishop, Jr., Jennifer Lynn Bishop and Michael L. Neff; grandchildren, Heather and Ashley; brother, Kenneth (Jeanne) Bishop; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family will receive friends on Monday, July 8, 2024 from 12:00 – 1:00 PM at Wappner Funeral Directors – Ontario, 100 S. Lexington Springmill Rd. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM. He will be laid to rest in Maple Grove Cemetery, New Haven, Ohio.
