One of my mother's older sisters, Aunt Pat, came out to California and my mother soon followed back in 1945. My mother was a key punch operator and lived in Los Angeles. I remember her telling me that she and her friends used to dance to all the big bands like Tommy Dorsey and Glen Miller. They used to go dancing at the Coconut Grove.
My mother met my father at a party of a mutual friend who thought they would hit it off. In fact, that friend was the cousin of the actor Jimmy Stewart. That house was on Pass Avenue in Burbank which part of the freeway was built on. After they met, they were inseparable. My mom and dad were married on May 1, 1948. Soon after, they bought a home in Glendale. This is where I was raised up until my junior year in high school.
We moved to Hacienda Heights where I finished the last two years of high school. This is the house where my beloved daddy passed away. I was three weeks pregnant with their second grandchild and didn't know it. I can't believe it's been nineteen years since his passing.
Soon after dad passed away mom moved to Upland to be closer to us, where she has been for the last sixteen to seventeen years.
Up to the very end my mom was an extremely happy and thoughtful person. She knew everyone. She loved her grandsons and often referred to them as grandson #1 (Nathan) and grandson #2 ( Mathew James). I always teased her that #2 tries harder! Ha! Towards the end, my mother took great comfort when I would bring our new puppies, my bird, Captain, or one of our other animals.
We will all miss my mom, and grandmother. I miss my mom soooooo much it physically hurts. I'm glad I was with her in the end. Now I have the rest of my time here in this world and long to see my mom and daddy doll again. I love you with all my being.
