Ann was born in Thatcham, England, on 3 October 1939. A quiet, only child, evacuated by WWII to a strict French Catholic boarding school at 3, and separated by immigration from her family at aged 10 (when her mother foolishly followed a US solider to New York on the HMS Queen Mary).
Ann’s lonely and difficult early days forged a remarkable self-sufficiency and iron will in an otherwise small, unassuming lady. Ann learned – and taught her family – to dream big and work hard because anything is possible with focus and determination. (Daddy used to say the only thing to do if Annie set her mind to something was to hang on for the ride)!
In 1958, Ann graduated from Portland High School, Maine. From 1959-1962, she worked for TWA Airlines in Kansas City and LA, she married in Hollywood, CA in 1961, lived in Virginia Beach, VA from 1969-1979 and settled in Montclair, California in 1979.
Ann’s single-minded refusal to take “no” for an answer motivated her to learn to swim at 30 . . . Start college at 40 . . . Graduate from CSU Fullerton and start her 17-year IRS career at 44 . . . Teach dance at 56 . . . Learn to ride a Harley and attend Sturgis at 58 . . . She was a proud Enrolled Agent, a Master Tax Preparer for H&R Block from 1972 – 2020, an Ontario Ladies Elk, member of the Orange County West Coast Swing Club and wife to two amazing men – Ronald Palmer Hoel (1961 til his death in 1996) and Terry Franklin Wylie (1998 til his death in 2019).
As angry as we are to lose our Warrior Mom to something as stupid as Covid19, we are comforted by the sure knowledge, she had a full life. Ann’s last words to her daughters was an unequivocal, “Hell, yes, I’m fighting . . .” and that’s how we will remember her.
Ann is survived by her daughters, Lisa Ranji and Terri Davis, her son’s in law Rangi Mathew and Mark Davis, and her grandsons, Matt, Boo, Sherry, Sarath and wife Sharon.
In lieu of flowers, we ask you to dance to your favorite song and raise a toast to the irreplaceable Ann.
