He was born March 9, 1928 in Oneonta the son of Peter D. and Julia (Kozech) Dokuchitz.
Pete graduated from Oneonta High School.
He enlisted in the US Navy in 1946, and proudly served in the Submarine Service until his honorable discharge in 1948. He then enrolled at Sienna College, where he graduated in 1952
He began his engineering career at Sprague Electronics in North Adams, MA, before joining Scintilla Corporation (now Amphenol) in Sidney. In 1963, Pete and his former wife, Joan Morse founded Custom Electronics., Inc.
Pete served in the New York State Assembly from 1973 to 1978, representing Otsego and Herkimer counties.
He served on the Public Service Board in the City of Oneonta, the Board of Education of the Unatego Central School system, Past Director of the National Commercial Bank and Trust Co., Regional Board, Executive Board Member of the Otschodela Council, Boy Scouts of America, past member of the Oneonta and Cooperstown Country Clubs, BPOE 1312, Kiwanis Club, Oneonta Post 259, American Legion, and St. Mary’s Church.
He was the recipient of the 1992 Sienna College Professor Joseph A. Buff Award.
He is survived by his daughter, Diane Dokuchitz Bowers, and her husband, John of Albuquerque, NM; his sons, Peter of Ft. Lauderdale, David and his wife, Mary of Oneonta, Paul and his wife, Dawn of New York City, and Jonathan and his partner Michael of Gilbertsville; three grand-daughters, Elizabeth Bowers Malchoff, and her husband, Jeff, Natalie Bowers, and Alexandra Dokuchitz Connolly, and her husband, Jonathan; two grandsons Gregory and Daniel Dokuchitz; his great grandsons, William and Thomas Malchoff; and his great granddaughter Emma Connolly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters, Taklia Harris and Marion Dokuchitz.
A funeral Mass will be offered on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at 10:15 AM at St. Mary’s Church with the Rev. David Wm. Mickiewicz, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
Friends may call on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St. Oneonta, NY 13820 from 5 to 7 at which time the family will be in attendance.
Peter’s family wishes to thank the staff of the Chestnut Park Nursing Home, and the Plains for their excellent care.
Peter loved his family, and the City of Oneonta. He was a respected business and community leader, and a friend to many. He will be greatly missed.
