George W. Seger Jr.

George W. Seger Jr., 84, an extraordinary man living an ordinary life, a fabulous husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, who taught us how to live a life with a sense of joy and adventure and an incredible sense of humor, died Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born April 19, 1932, in Queens, the son of the late George W. Seger Sr. and Marie (Sheridan) Seger.

At the age of 14, George left his family and moved to Buffalo to study to be a priest. He went to the second level and then met the love of his life, Madeline. After leaving the seminary, George proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War. On May 25, 1957, George married the love of his life, Madeline Kump at St. Mary's Church in Woodside. Together they shared 59 wonderful years of marriage, a testament of true love. While living most of their life in Bellerose, George worked for more than 25 years at AT&T in NYC as a technician. George was a founding member of O.A. local chapters and a life member of Knights of Columbus. He also volunteered as a counselor at South Oaks Rehabilitation Center.

George is survived by his loving wife, Madeline Seger; five children, George (Annie) Seger III, Christopher (April) Seger, Nancy (Bob) Seger/Gagel, Marylou (Maryellen) Seger and Claire (Jim) O'Connor; 11 grandchildren, Jennon, Ryan, Justtice, Alexander, Emma, Caitlin, Kirwin, Paige, Farrell, James and Quinn; two great-grandchildren, McKenna and Jenna; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Madlyn Seger; grandson, Brett Sturm; sister, Loretta Sweet; and brother, Joseph Seger.

George's family expresses its sincere appreciation to Dawn, Jenessa and Tina of AM-PM Home Health Care for the wonderful care and compassion that they have given to the entire Seger family. Without them it wouldn't have been possible for George to have passed peacefully in his home in the Little Red Schoolhouse Community.

Friends may call from 9:30 to 11 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 28, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St, Oneonta.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 28, at St. Mary's Church, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta with the Rev. David Mickiewicz, pastor, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Mary's Food Pantry.
