Tom was born in Urbandale, Iowa. The family moved to Omaha in 1953, and he graduated from South High School in 1961. Following a decade-long tenure in the Navy, where he dutifully served during the Vietnam War, Tom planted his roots once again in Omaha. He became the owner of a beloved Bellevue tavern, the Chandler Inn, where he warmly welcomed friends and neighbors for a quarter century. In retirement, Tom found joy in building model ships. He was a formidable competitor in Scrabble and Word Chums, and delighted in the entertainment of his children and grandchildren.
Tom was also preceded in death by parents, Austin and Corrinne (Searcy) Johnson; and brother, Stephen Johnson.
Tom is survived by his children, Michael (Terry) Johnson and Erika (Matt) Haifley; siblings, Jack Johnson, Judith Weiland, Virginia Semple, Donna (Phil) Bottorff, Roger (Paege) Johnson, and Brad (Carmen) Johnson; grandchildren, Steven Haifley, Rylie Johnson, Austin Haifley, and Sam Johnson; Beloved Pet, Muffy; and many friends and family.
A visitation for Thomas will be held Friday, January 19, 2024 from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM at Westlawn-Hillcrest Funeral Home, 5701 Center St, Omaha, Nebraska 68106, followed by a service at 4:30 PM.
Military honors will be arranged at a later time, ensuring fair winds and calm seas for the occasion.
