Donna was born on January 19th, 1945 in Omaha, NE to her loving mother and father Ann and Edward Remar. Her siblings included an older sister Judy and two younger brothers Ed and Jim.
Donna grew up in South Omaha very close to her siblings and cousins. She attended St. Rose Catholic School and then graduated from Bishop Ryan High School.
After high school she attended cosmetology school and started her career in Bellevue with her life Long Friend Millie where she worked as a hairstylist.
After working several years, Donna made the decision to stay at home and raise a family. Her first born was Amy in 1970, followed by Kevin in 1971 and Julie in 1975. Donna was a selfless and dedicated mother who enjoyed playing in the pool and downstairs in the basement with her children. Donna was an expert seamstress making clothes for her family and friends as well as thousands of Barbie Doll clothes including beautiful wedding dresses sewing the pearls on by hand. She was well known in the community for her amazing work.
Donna and her family moved to McCook, NE in 1978 where she continued to care for her children and sew. She met many friends and enjoyed spending time with them. She loved to camp with her children and friends. She would spend hours preparing all the food and packing the camper so her children could enjoy the time outdoors. She had a boat as well and the family enjoyed fishing, skiing and floating in the water on their life jackets. Building fires in the evening to cook food and roast marshmallows and long bike rides.
In 1980 the family moved to Grand Island where they spent a couple of years before settling in Papillion, NE in 1982.
Donna began working at the family business where she packed welding rod and farm supplies for shipment. She then took a job at Midlands Hospital where she earned her CNA and ultimately was promoted to Scheduling. Donna was excellent at her job and was able to enrich and improve the lives of those around her. She was transferred to the Billing Department where she took a job as a billing specialist working with many friends that brought her much joy.
After she retired Donna was able to travel with her daughter and grandchildren. They enjoyed hundreds of trips across the United States and into Mexico. Her favorite spots were the Grand Tetons, Mt Rushmore, Covered Bridges of Madison County, and watching the cranes descend in Kearney.
In October 2004 she was introduced to her life partner Bob Schaecher. It was love at first sight. They enjoyed traveling together on trips that included a cruise to Mexico and Alaska. They loved playing farkle and there is a long hard fought battle for the money in the envelope. They adopted a dog named Dolly, who grew to become the baby of their family. Dolly was the most loving companion for them. Above all, Bob took great care of Donna and always bought her favorite strawberry wedding cake for them to enjoy together.
Donna spent her time reading, sewing, making towels and crocheting. Her Children and her Grandchildren were her life. She had an incredible impact on each one of them.
Alexa – was her bargain shopper and sewing partner. She has grown to be incredibly kind and loving just like her grandmother. Alexa couldn’t be happier to have shared bright blue eyes together and will always be grateful to have gotten them from her.
Tyler – was her buddy who lovingly referred to her as Gram-Cracker. Donna’s favorite things was Tyler’s hugs. He has grown to be a loving and protective spirit just like his grandmother and wears her cross around his neck every day.
Will – was her “big guy”. You had a hard time pulling her from the stands watching him play baseball. She loved attending any of his sporting events and was one of his biggest cheerleaders. He will forever cherish the tattoo he got with his grammy this past December.
Hayden – was her “baby”. Grammy loved watching Hayden compete in taekwondo and then later in One Act Play production. They spent time together sewing and eating treats. She will forever remember “smarties” and butterscotch candies as grammy’s candies.
Donna struggled most of her final years with horrible pain yet she continued to bring joy to everyone around her. Her contagious smiles and undying kindness for those around her was motivation to all of us to be better people. She loved the color pink, Popcorn, Pretzels, Licorice, Salt Water Taffy, Ice Cream and Popsicles.
Her passing has left an enormous hole in our hearts and our mission moving forward is to strive to live our lives with the love and kindness that she taught us and exhibited everyday. We are incredibly grateful for every minute we were able to spend with this amazing woman and we are all honored to have known her.
Thank you all for sharing this time with us and to be a part of the healing our broken hearts need.
Survived by her children, Amy (Jim) Sedlak, Kevin Antoniak, and Julie (Tim) Bauder; life partner, Bob Schaecher; and grandchildren, Alexa and Tyler Sedlak, and Will and Hayden Bauder.
