David L. Sherwood

David L. Sherwood, 87, of Bellevue, Nebraska, entered into the presence of His Lord and Savior on Thursday December 7, 2023. He was born February 18, 1936 in Independence, IA, the son of the late Irving and Anna (Freeman) Sherwood, and was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley (Neuber) Sherwood.

He is survived by his daughter, Hope (Sherwood) Broadway (Brian) of Sumter, SC; step-daughter, Melissa Schwartz (Ralph) of Tunkhannock, PA; three grandsons, Steven Dunn, Ben Zeidner, and Zach Zeidner; one granddaughter, Ashleigh Schwartz; one sibling, Pastor Jackson Sherwood (Lorna), of Firestone, CO; two great grandchildren, Jackson and Jonathan Dunn; and several nieces, nephews, and close friends.

After joining the United States Air Force in 1955, David served his country for 33 years, including two tours of duty as a medic in Thailand during the Vietnam War. He received numerous awards throughout his military career including the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Silver Star and Bronze Star, Air Force Commendation Medal, and Distinguished Presidential Unit Citation, among others. The second half of his military career was in Intelligence after graduating from the Air Force’s Academy Officer Training School.

Major Sherwood retired to Bellevue, Nebraska where he served faithfully at the SAC Memorial Chapel located at Offutt Air Force Base and later at Thanksgiving Church in Bellevue, NE near his home. Annually, he would play the part of Matthew in the Easter cantata at the SAC Memorial Chapel. He also volunteered regularly at Bertha Barber Elementary School’s reading program, reading books to young children, and he was a published freelance writer. One of his most memorable events was meeting Jacqueline Kennedy in Texas the day before President Kennedy was assassinated.

A celebration of David’s life will be held at the Westlawn-Hillcrest Funeral Home in Omaha, NE on Monday, December 18th at 11:30 am, with a visitation from 10:30-11:30 am. David’s final resting spot with be next to his beloved wife, Shirley Sherwood.
