Inez was born in Corinth, MS on February 6, 1928 to Henry and Mattie Lou Carmon, the fifth of six children. She grew up in Tyronza, AR where she picked cotton as a sharecropper’s daughter, and learned to cook, garden, sew, and care for younger children in the family. When she was 20, she left home one day with nothing but the clothes she wore, and rode a bus to Memphis looking for a better future. Living in a boarding house and working in a factory, she was an independent young woman. Through her brother, she met the love of her life, Bill Hughey. They married and raised two children, Patsy and Larry, in Shelby County, TN; then retired to Olive Branch over 50 years ago.
Inez was a loving daughter, sister, aunt, wife, mother, and grandmother, and a talented cook and seamstress. She was the Rock of Faith for her entire family. Likewise, she touched the lives of many young people and adult women as she taught Sunday School for over 67 years. She was a good and faithful servant of the Lord, giving of her time, talents, and wisdom in many capacities at Oakville Baptist Church, Broadway Baptist Church, Immanuel Baptist Church, and Longview Heights Baptist Church.
Inez was predeceased by her husband, Bill Hughey, and her son, Larry Hughey. Left to cherish her memory are: her daughter and son-in-law, Patsy and Don Christenberry of Olive Branch; grandchildren: Jennifer and Elton Griggs of Mason, TN; Amanda Hughey of Olive Branch; Lauren and Jeremiah Beard of Venice, FL; Shelbi and Ramsey Brown of Oxford, MS; and Kayla and Zach Montgomery of Huntsville, AL; great-grandchildren: Trey and Kacey Griggs of Brighton, TN; Beau and Sarah Griggs of Mason, TN; Drew McGehee and Karis McGehee of Senatobia, MS; Grayson Brown and Blakely Brown of Oxford, MS; great-great-grandson, Emmett Griggs of Brighton, TN; and great-great-granddaughter Ellie Griggs of Mason, TN.
The family will receive friends for a time of visitation at Brantley Funeral Home on Friday, November 15, 2024 from 10:00 am until 11:00 am with a funeral service to begin at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at Forest Hill South.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or The Four Friends Ministry at Longview Heights Baptist Church.
