Davie Nelson “Sam” Camp, 96, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 24, 2024 at Baptist East in Memphis, TN. He was born to Major and Lissie Mae Camp on January 14, 1928 in Memphis, TN, and was raised in Byhalia, Ms.
He was a proud graduate of Mississippi State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting, and he remained a passionate supporter of the MSU Bulldogs throughout his life, actively participating in the Bulldog Club and The Bulldog Initiative.
With over 40 years of service at John Hancock Life Insurance Co., Sam left a lasting impact on those around him. He will be remembered for his unwavering kindness, dedication to family, and commitment to his community.
Sam found true love in Mary Jo Camp, whom he met at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio while learning ballroom dancing. His faith was central to his life; he was a founding member of Trafalgar Village Baptist Church, serving as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and chairman of the ushers. Later Sam served as a deacon and chairman of clerks at Bellevue Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial contributions be made to Mid-American Baptist Theological Seminary, 2095 Appling Rd. Cordova, TN.
Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jo Camp; his parents, Major and Lissie Mae Camp, and four siblings.
He leaves behind his two children, Jeffrey “Jeff” Camp (Cindy), Renee Laidlaw; three grandchildren, Michael Laidlaw (Valerie), Candace Arnold (Jeffery), Rachel Callahan (Ryan), and seven great-grandchildren: Powell, Collins, Olive, Reece, Rhodes, Reynolds, and one who is on the way, Henry Nelson.
The family will receive friends on Monday, October 28, 2024 from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm at Brantley Funeral Home, 6875 Cockrum St. Olive Branch, Ms 38654. A private graveside will follow at Byhalia Cemetery.
