She was born on March 7, 1933, in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of Daniel and Shirley Simmons Whelan.
Joan was a fun loving person, loved by all she came across. It wasn't uncommon for those who met her to refer to her as "Mom". She didn't have a mean bone in her body and was always looking out for the under-dog. Always willing to help those in need whether she knew you or not. She continued to work helping other seniors right up to the day she first became ill. She had a zest for life and was continuously on the go. Nothing could slow her down. She loved to travel with her daughter and go on mini vacations to visit her children and siblings. In addition to the love she had for her family, throughout her life she loved her pets; mostly her dog "Muffin" who she will now reunite with. While she resided at Fairview, she missed her cats very much. Joan also was known for her beautiful flower arrangements, her knitted afghans that she made and gifted to everyone. She loved to garden and was proud of her pretty yard. In Joan's younger years she was a talented tap dancer and in her later years she enjoyed very much dancing with her husband. Joan had a good voice and was known to burst out a song or two. Joan was a "Great Lady", "A Great Mother ", "A Great Wife and a Friend". She will be sadly missed!
She is survived by her husband J. David Murphy; her sons Daniel Farrar of Westbrook and Dennis Farrar and his wife Karen Plante of Manchester; her daughters Diane Farrar of Groton, Patricia Fowler and her husband Gene of Washington, ME and Kathy Haslam and her significant other Steve Davis of Niceville, FL; her brothers Robert Whelan and his wife Lucille of Valatie, NY and Raymond Whelan and his wife Rose of Clermont, FL and Hunlock Creek, PA; 12 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her former husband Alvin Farrar; and her siblings Richard Whelan and Janice Gallagher.
