Sylvia was born on February 7, 1947 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Kansas City Missouri to Robert and Virginia Paige. She grew up on a farm in Olathe, Kansas. Sylvia attended Stuck Elementary School, Olathe Junior High School and graduated from Olathe High School in 1965. From there she attended Ottawa University and was a member of the social club Phi Kappa Chi. Sylvia graduated in 3 ½ years with the class of 1969 earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education. She taught a total of 39 ½ years, Kindergarten, 4th grade, but the majority of her years were spent teaching 1st grade in her classroom called the “Mouse House.” She received her Masters of Education degree in 1992 from MidAmerica Nazarene College. She enjoyed traveling, collecting sea shells on the beach, flower gardening, reading and watching the Hallmark channel. Sylvia loved watching the Royals, the Chiefs and especially KU Basketball. Family dogs were special to her including her time with granddogs Belle and Emma. Most of all, she loved spending time with family and friends. She truly loved being a Nana to Caroline and Johnny and was their number one fan watching Caroline dance and Johnny play sports.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Virginia.
Sylvia is survived by two daughters, Michelle M. Upton (Dwayne) and Tresa L. Vogel (John); two grandchildren, Caroline and Johnny; sister Sharon Connie Meredith (Bob); two nephews Neil Meredith and Brett Meredith (Vanessa); niece Kali Narozny (Chris); great nephew Cameron; and great niece Meredith.
A Celebration of Life will be held on July 5, 2021 at Shawnee Community Christian Church, 5340 Martindale Road, Shawnee, KS 66218. The service will be casual with her family wearing Mickey Mouse t-shirts to honor Sylvia. You are welcome to join us in your Mickey Mouse “gear” or your favorite KU/Kansas City sports team. Visitation is from 3:30-4:30 p.m. with service immediately following. Please join us after the service at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park, Grand Pavilion Shelter, 14907 West 87th Street, Lenexa, Kansas 66215 for a picnic dinner.
