Ruth Elaine Smith

Ruth Elaine Smith, 94, of Olathe, KS, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at Vintage Park of Gardner, KS. She will forever be remembered as a loving mom, grandma, great grandma, aunt, sister and friend to everyone she met.

Ruth was born on October 3, 1919 in Edgerton, KS to Frederick Jacob and Mamie Eileen (Denoon) Ortolf. She attended and graduated from John P. St. John High School, Olathe, KS class of 1938, and after graduation she earned her certificate in Beauty School. Ruth worked at the Election Board for several years, and retired from the catalog department at Montgomery Wards in Olathe, KS. She enjoyed bowling, watching the Royals, Chiefs and KU sporting events. Most importantly she enjoyed spending time with her family, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ruth was an active member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church of Olathe and Divine Mercy Catholic Church of Gardner, KS. She will be sadly missed by everyone that knew her.

Ruth is preceded in death by her parents Frederick and Mamie Ortolf, loving husband of 69 years Joseph (Joe) Smith who passed away on August 21, 2010, son-in-law Mike Correll and brother Everett Ortolf.

She is survived by her children, Michael Smith, Patti Newson (Lee), Teresa Correll, Larry Smith (Nancy), Elizabeth Martens (Dave) and Frederick Smith (Cheryl) all of Olathe, KS. She will be sadly missed by her 14 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. She also leaves her beloved dog, Mollie.

Ruth will be cremated according to her wishes. A Memorial Mass will be Tuesday, 10:30 a.m., September 9th, 2014 at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, 555 W. Main St., Gardner, KS. Inurnment in Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Olathe, KS. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the church prior to Mass. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to: Vintage Park of Gardner, 869 Juniper Terr. Gardner, KS. 66030.
