It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Hanna, a devoted husband, father, grandpa and friend, who left us peacefully on October 5, 2024 at the age of 71. He left behind a legacy of unwavering loyalty, humor, kindness and compassion, while never meeting a stranger. John was known for his warmth, whether it was his big hugs, or his high-fives, he always wanted everyone around him to feel welcome and appreciated. John’s wife, three daughters, three sons-in-law, and five grandchildren were his world. He cherished his friendships, many of which began in childhood, and he remained close to those he called his “cronies”, “partnas” and “dukes”.
John developed a passion for baseball early on, cheering for the KC Royals with his father beginning in 1969 at Municipal Stadium, then Kauffman stadium as a season ticket holder for over 50 years. Always sitting behind home plate, John became a fixture in section 128 with his booming voice, cheering and heckling alike.
Born in KCMO and raised in Shawnee, KS, John started working when he was 14, parking cars at the “Hanna” owned parking lots in downtown KCMO and continued to work in the auto service industry until retiring in 2021. During retirement, he enjoyed spending his time cheering loudly at his grandchildren’s activities, meeting up for dinner or a cocktail, traveling to visit friends and sending countless texts to everyone in his phone.
Though he is no longer with us, John's spirit will forever be in the hearts of those who loved him. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Juanita, his sister, Cheryl, and his beloved wife of 41 years, Janet. He is survived by his daughters April Beckwith (Ken), Lara Rassette (Chris), Brooke Erin Fisher (Jake) and five grandchildren (Ben, Olivia, Kael, Evelyn, Brynn).
The visitation will be held Friday, October 11 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at McGilley & Frye Funeral Home: 105 E. Loula Street, Olathe, KS 66061. Guests are invited to wear Royals attire along with the family in his honor. A private burial will be held at a later date.
Rest in peace, John. Our lives won’t be the same without you.
