Mary Vern Davenport, 74, of OKC passed from this life on March 18, 2017 with her loving family by her side. Services have been entrusted to the care of Advantage Funeral & Cremation Services and a service celebrating her life will be held at the funeral home located at 7720 S. Penn in South OKC at 2pm on Saturday, April 1, 2017.
Mary Vern Speed was born on July 21, 1942 in Tipton, OK to Timothy Tip Speed and Sarah Marie (Curry) Speed. She was raised in the Gander Flatts in SE OKC and attended school at Capitol Hill. Following the 9th grade, Mary went to work for Public Supply Company installing screens on windows and doors. In 1980, Mary was introduced by a friend to James Davenport and they were married later that year in Guymon, OK. Mary continued working at Public Supply and made many wonderful friends there before retiring in 1990, after nearly 35 years of service.
Later that year she opened the Silver King at NW 5th and Western. She spent 15 years serving drinks to loyal patrons and serving meals to the local homeless population. In 2005, she retired for good to spend time with her family and raise her granddaughter. She enjoyed doing puzzles, cooking, entertaining, gardening and crocheting. She was rarely happier than when she was helping a person in need or when she was with her Grandma Curry hunting for treasure at neighborhood garage and yard sales. Mary Davenport was a loving wife, a protective mother, a proud grandmother, and a loyal friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents Sarah and Elbert Smith and Tim Speed, as well as a daughter-in-law Pam Aaron. She is survived by the love of her life James Davenport of the home; seven children: Ernie Aaron of S. OKC, Ellen Harring of Porum, OK, Susie Bullard and husband Darrell of Luther, OK, Sommie Griffin and wife Connie of Moore, OK, Billy Ray Griffin and wife Mary of Moore, OK, Jennifer Winter and husband Scott of Mustang, OK, and Gary Cassels of Sayre, OK. Three siblings: Tim Speed and wife Carol Speed of Harrah, Carlan Rodriguez and husband Raul of Moore, OK, and Elbert Smith Jr of S. OKC. Mary is also survived by her 22 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
