Dr. Margaret King entered this world on May 26, 1946. She was the oldest of two children born to James and Mary King.
Dr. King met her life partner, Evelyn Keffer, and together they shared a lifetime dedicated to others. Dr. King graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma in 1969 with majors in Health and Physical Education and Biology, and minors in Education and Chemistry. She was honored in 2003 as a Distinguished Graduate from UCO. Dr. King obtained a PhD in Medical Physiology and Biophysics from The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center Graduate College in 1975.
While working as a cancer research scientist for the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, Dr. King received her MBA in 1983 from Oklahoma City University. In 1993, she went on to graduate from Oklahoma State University as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.
When the Oklahoma federal building was bombed in 1995, Dr. King volunteered as a veterinarian to treat the rescue dogs at the bombing site. Dr. King and Evelyn opened Acre View Pet Hospital in Edmond, Oklahoma, where they became involved in establishing animal care centers. More recently, Dr. King worked for the Edmond Free to Live Animal Sanctuary. Her incredible achievements were only matched by her continuous devotion to animals.
As an expert in her field, Dr. King served as an educator and consultant throughout her career. She also wrote a column about pets that appeared for several years in the Edmond Sun Newspaper. After Dr. King sold Acre View, she established a mobile veterinary practice. In 2007, Bank of Oklahoma presented Dr. King with a Small Business of the Year Award.
On a personal note, Dr. King played the violin and enjoyed attending performances of the Oklahoma City Symphony. She was also an avid sports fan. She held season tickets to OU Women’s Basketball. She and Evelyn loved to travel, and made sure to visit every state in the continental US. In later years, they joined the RV’ing Women’s travel group, engaging in annual trips and functions with dear friends. Dr. King was honored with so many accolades throughout her distinguished career. There’s just too many to list, but amongst the numerous recognitions and awards, one stands out. Dr. Margaret King was definitely an accomplished woman. To her collection of nieces and nephews, though, she was simply Aunt Margaret; always hard-working, always full of fun and laughter, always carving the holiday turkey. She was an exceptional inspiration; living a life that exemplified a “can-do” attitude. The word “fail” was not in her vocabulary. She showed everyone that any dream is possible if you set your mind to it, and work hard to achieve it.
A visitation for Margaret will be held Tuesday, January 30, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Memorial Park Funeral Home, 13313 North Kelley, Oklahoma City, OK 73131.
A funeral service will occur Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Memorial Park Funeral Home.
