Laquita “Fern” Thompson, beloved Mother, Grandmother & Great Grandmother, 89, of Midwest City, OK, went to be with our Lord on July 1, 2024 after being placed on hospice in March of this year, leaving a void her family cannot fill.
Fern was born in Portales, NM on June 22, 1935 to Fanny and James “Cubb” Wilson. She was the oldest of six children. When her parents divorced she became a second mother to her siblings Elizabeth, Tommy (Jerry) and Effie. Working in the fields digging potatoes and gathering broom-corn she helped to support her family at a very early age. She loved the movies and would fondly remember taking her sister Elizabeth. “They could get in for 15 cents each and get a coke and candy bar for 10 cents each to share.” Her mother went on to remarry and have two additional children, Willie Ann, and Tracy. She went to live with her father and stepmother in Roswell NM at the age of 7. Her teenage years were wrought with adventure. Dances at the bottomless lakes, working in a drugstore soda fountain, and acquiring and reselling someone’s stash of liquor for which she received the nickname “half-pint”. Leaving home at the age of 15 she did not finish her formal education but life experience made her wise beyond her years.
Fern was a devoted wife to Billy Joe Thompson whom she married at the age of 19. They were married for 66 years prior to his passing in 2020. Their marriage was an adventure that led them to dwell in several states from California to Oklahoma. Along the way they adopted two children; Tawna and Billy. She was a devoted mother who always put her family before herself. Her life was full of family. She was Sis, Momma, Aunt Fern, Grandma Fern, and Great Grandma T. She leaves behind her children Tawna Howard and Billy Thompson. Siblings; Jerry Wilson (Tommy), Willie Ann Scarborough, Tracy Henderson. Six grandchildren; Cissili Sample, Eric Howard, Hailey Morgan, Cloe Thompson, Risa Thompson, Ryn Thompson. Six great grandchildren; Karter and Luna Sample, Mason and Emilyn Howard, Hayden and Grayson Morgan.
Fern was loved by all. She had a rough and tumble start. Loved humming birds, anything vibrant red, a smoke and a bit of spirits. Spoke her mind (her filter sometimes had big holes in it). She loved her family and life with a passion that kept her going past what her body was able to endure. She will be missed but never forgotten.
A memorial service for Laquita will be held Friday, July 5, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Bill Eisenhour Funeral Home, 8805 NE 23rd Street, Oklahoma City, OK 73141.
