Janet was born in Vinita, Oklahoma on January 23, 1933 to Carl O and. Marguerite Jo (Parks) Newland. After graduation from Vinita High School, she attended the University of Tulsa and was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority. It was there that she met her future husband, David G. Campbell. Before marriage, Janet worked in Washington D.C. for Oklahoma Senator Mike Monroney. Upon her return to Oklahoma, she settled back in Vinita where she worked for the Grand River Dam Authority and later married David on March 1, 1958.
Janet and David subsequently settled in Oklahoma City in 1959. She began pursuing her lifelong passion of genealogy and Cherokee History. She was a recognized member of the Cherokee Tribe and contributed numerous articles to the Oklahoma Historical Society over the years. She amassed a vast collection historical documents/information and was in the process of finalizing a book on the Cherokees at the time of her passing. Additionally, she was an officer in a family owned oil and gas consulting company for several decades.
Janet is survived by her husband of 62 years, David G. Campbell of Oklahoma City. She is also survived by her son Carl D. Campbell and his wife Jennifer N. Campbell, along with her only granddaughter Victoria G. Campbell, all of whom currently reside in Houston, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Carlene Jo Wiese.
In accordance with her final wishes, the funeral services will be held at 1 PM on September 16, 2020 at Memorial Park Cemetery in Oklahoma City and will be limited to her immediate family.
As an alternative to flowers, the family asks that donations can also be made in her honor to Red Earth, Inc. of Oklahoma City.
