June 23, 1958 - May 19, 2022
James G. Harlow, III was born in Coronado, California to James G. Harlow Jr. and Jane Bienfang Harlow when his father was serving in the U.S. Navy. His parents moved back to Oklahoma when he was 7 months old, and he has lived in Norman, Ardmore and Oklahoma City. He married Susan Fuller Harlow February 13, 1988, and they lived in Edmond, Oklahoma.
Jim passed away peacefully on May 19, 2022, after an extended illness with his wife by his side.
Jim graduated from John Marshall High School in 1976 where he enjoyed playing the Bass drum in the marching band. After High School he worked for the Santa Fe Railroad, and later for Marriott food service at Will Rodgers World Airport. He then worked at the Oklahoma State Auditor and Inspectors office for seventeen years. He was also a licensed EMT and a medical transport driver. Jim spent much of his time volunteering to help others recover from catastrophic weather or other disasters. He was very compassionate and driven to help others in need through volunteering at The American Red Cross of Oklahoma where he was awarded Volunteer of the Year. Jim was an avid storm chaser and weather watcher and used his skills on the emergency scanner to help those in need. He had many interests in life including trains, planes, firefighters and photography. He was a member of the Guthrie Scottish Rite and enjoyed helping youth through DeMolay and Job’s daughters. He always had his camera on the ready at an event where the youth were involved. Jim enjoyed his family immensely, often teasing them with a joke, a hearty laugh and a big loving smile. He cared deeply for animals, especially his beloved German Shepherd, Bruno.
Jim is survived by his wife Susan Harlow of Edmond; his stepdaughter Melissa Pratt and her husband Norm of Colorado; mother, Jane B. Harlow; brother and sister-in-law, David and Aimee Harlow of Oklahoma City, his niece and nephew, Kristina and Will; and his aunt, Mary Harlow Shepherd of Portland, Oregon.
Jim was preceded in death by his father, James G. Harlow, Jr. of Oklahoma City and his paternal grandparents Dr. and Mrs. James G. Harlow (Bobbie) of Norman, OK, and his maternal grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. Ralph Bienfang (Bess) of Norman, OK.
A private family graveside service was held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Oklahoma City on May 25, 2022. Dr. Trevor Smith of Nichols Hills United Methodist Church presided.
The Harlow family would like to thank the compassionate and loving care givers: Karen Brown, Lifecare manager; Angel, Savannah, Alexa, Tracy, Jerome and Tyler at Spanish Cove in Yukon, OK; and Traditions Hospice for their care.
