Born on December 30, 1942, in Hugo, Oklahoma, James was the first of seven boys born to Francis and Bonnie Butts during a challenging era in American history. His parents worked tirelessly to provide for their family, with his mother cleaning houses and ironing for extra income while his father served in the carpenters' union after World War II.
Growing up in a bustling household, James faced the trials of a modest upbringing with resilience and humor. He and his brothers shared countless memories of their childhood, from navigating the challenges of school to creating joy amid the chaos of their two-bedroom home. James often reminisced about cruising in cool hot rods, enjoying the music of the popular DJ Wolfman Jack, and spending time at local drive-ins with his brother Tom, who was his lifelong companion.
After graduating from Northwest Classen High School, James enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1962. Following his service, he married his high school sweetheart, Beverly Baker, and together they welcomed two sons, Danny Ray and Kevin James.
James had a passion for cars and mechanics that shaped his career. He initially followed in his father’s footsteps in construction but later found his calling as an automotive mechanic. Despite a setback from a workplace injury, he transitioned to the residential siding business, where he worked until his retirement.
In his later years, James enjoyed socializing at local pubs, night fishing at lakes and rivers, and celebrating holidays with family and friends. As his health declined, he spent his final days at the family home in Guthrie, Oklahoma, cared for by his brother Toney and sister-in-law Sharon. Though he became more secluded, the love of his family remained a constant source of strength.
James will be remembered for his enduring spirit, his love for his family, and his ability to find joy even in the face of adversity. He leaves behind a legacy of resilience and cherished memories that will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
James Butts is survived by his son, Danny Ray; grandchildren, Ashley, Josh, and Kenny; his brothers Gerald, Toney, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
