George Truett Gulley, 92, went home to be with the Lord on September 17, 2011. He was born on June 28, 1919 in Nashville, NC to Rev. J. Paul and Berthal (Odom) Gulley. George and his wife of 65 years, Frances Inez Smith were married at the Boston Avenue Methodist Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma on may 29, 1946. He had served his country in the US Army during WWII with tours in Belgium, Holland, France and Germany and also during the Korean Conflict. He returned home to his family in OKC in 1954. George was in the freight business in OKC for many years, not “retiring” until he was 75. During those years he enjoyed golf, fishing, hunting and bowling in a church league. He was an active member of Village Baptist Church for the past 40 years; serving as Director of Sunday School, singing bass in the choir, and serving on various committees. At age 12, George was saved at this Daddy’s church in Crozet, VA. George could be found at home with Inez, at the Brit-Vil Food Pantry each week or on the golf course with his buddies. He loved his Lord and has left that legacy to his family: daughters, Pam Patterson and husband, Marvin, of Konawa, OK; Patty Knight and husband, Ray, of Tulsa and his grandchildren: Lisa; Memory and husband Shane Coker of Asher, OK; Andrea and husband, Mike Hinkle of Broken Arrow and Laura Knight. Great-grandchildren: Megan, Mason, Jessa, Trinity, McKenzie, Payton, Charlee Jo, Landon Truett and Kathryn Rose. Our papa was loved so much and will be missed by his family and a host of friends. George was preceded in death by two infant sons; his mother, Berthal Odom when he was 7 years old; his father, J.P. Gulley and step-mother, Myrtle Kent Moon. He is survived by wife, Inez, of the home; brothers: Dr. Marcus Gulley and Sally of Winston-Salem, NC; Wm. Louis Gulley and Marilyn of Lake St. Louis, MO; Robert M. Gulley and Margaret of Sierra Vista, AZ; and his two sisters: Sheila Plott and Glenn of Toano, VA; Dawn Edwards and Ed of Arlington, VA. The celebration service honoring the life of George will be held at the Village Baptist Church, May Avenue, OKC on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. The family will be available to greet friends at the funeral home during visitation on Tuesday, September 20th from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
