He lived in the Britton area and attended Britton Baptist Church where his father was the pastor. George graduated from Britton High School in 1950 and about a year later joined the military to serve four years in the Navy. During those four years he lived in Massachusetts and Kwajalein Islands in the Pacific Ocean. In April of 1955 after completing his duty in the navy, George returned to Oklahoma to start his career. His lifelong goal was to be a farmer but he settled for being a school teacher. He graduated in 1959 from Central State University in Edmond with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education with a specialty in Mechanical Drawing. His first teaching job was at Central High School. During this time he went back to college to work toward his Master’s Degree in counseling. In the fall of 1961 George became a counselor at John Marshall High School where he spent most of his career as counselor and assistant principal.
On June 25, 1960 George married Frankie Yvonne Crownover and a few years later they had two daughters, Tammy and Michelle. George was a very devoted husband and father and strong spiritual leader in their home. He and his family continued to attend Britton Baptist church where he also taught the 5th grade Sunday school class until the early 1980’s. George was not all work though. He loved to play and made sure he included his family in his fun. He enjoyed gardening, tennis, jogging, camping, playing both the piano and trumpet, snow skiing, and sledding on the hills in his neighborhood anytime it would snow.
George loved life and loved to be around laughter. He was a member of the Gideons and experienced great joy passing out bibles to students at the University of Central Oklahoma - his alma mater. He and Frankie were members of the Oklahoma Baptist Disaster team and traveled to several states to assist in areas destroyed by disasters. They also enjoyed the motor home club and spent the last 25 years traveling all over the United States. Dad also had a lot of fun with his model A club and He and Frankie could be seen on many parade days dressed up and driving their 1928 model A.
George became a new person after the birth of his five grandchildren: Bree, Niko, Ryan, Joshua, and Emilie. It was as though their birth gave him permission to be a kid again. He enjoyed taking them on trips, camping, and snow skiing and attending their sporting events. He played football with them and frisbee golf and we couldn’t have a family get together without having a hotdog cookout. He had a pride for these grandchildren and he received a lot of joy spending time with them.
George lived a full life. Although he will be missed his memories will remain in our hearts forever. We know that his faith in God and assurance of a home in heaven will give him an eternal peace. We love you. Peace until we meet again.
