April 23, 1926 to May 7, 2015
Ernestine Scott, 89, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 7, 2015. She was born to Dora and E. Luther Holmes in Pampa, Texas on April 23, 1926. Her musical interest and talent began as a child and by age 11 she had her own weekly local radio program, featuring her live performances on the piano, organ and accordion.
She moved to Oklahoma City to pursue studies at Oklahoma City University and later attended The Eastman School of Music in New York. Although she had the talent and ability to pursue her own performing career, she chose instead to spend her talent nurturing young people to discover their talent, to love and create music, and for many, to find their own careers in music. As Adjunct Professor at Oklahoma City University, she pursued a prolific professional teaching career instructing students from every part of the United States and abroad.
As a longtime member of Oklahoma Music Teachers Association and Music Teachers National Association, she led her students to top honors on every level. Her students have won critical acclaim and have performed with major orchestras and in recitals throughout the world. In addition to guiding and caring for her students, Ernestine (known as “Teenie” to her husband and close friends) poured out her love on her many dogs, numbering 13 over the course of her adult life. Other passions included using her talented hands to produce gorgeous roses in her backyard, and driving her 1966 Yellow Stingray Corvette, which she owned from 1966 until recent years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dora and E. Luther, her beloved big brother, Leon, and her loving husband of many years, Sublett Scott. She leaves behind two nephews, Ronald Holmes and Randall Holmes, as well as many devoted students and a host of loving friends.
Funeral services to remember and celebrate her life will be held at Hahn-Cook/Street & Draper at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 15, 2015 followed by an interment at Memorial Park Cemetery in Edmond OK. Visitation is open on the preceding Wednesday and Thursday from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm at Hahn-Cook/Street & Draper, 6600 Broadway Extension, Oklahoma City, OK.
