Funeral services for Walter F. Simmons Sr., age 70 of Mt. Alone Road Heuvelton, will be held on Friday, July 10 at 4:00pm at the Fox & Murray Funeral Home with Pastor Reggie Curtis officiating. Burial will be held privately. Reception following at Heuvelton Fire Hall.
Calling hours will be held also on Friday, July 10 from 2:00pm until the time of the service. Mr. Simmons passed away on Monday (July 6, 2015) at the Riverledge Healthcare Facility surrounded by his loving family.
Surviving is his wife Dorothy “Dot”; a son Walter Simmons Jr. & his wife Kristi of Heuvelton; grandchildren Patrick J. Watts of Heuvelton, Dillon Simmons and his fiancée Lacey Piraro of Lake Charles, LA, Brittany, Madison & Kailey Simmons all of Heuvelton; great grandchildren Jaxon Watts & Aiden Simmons; three brothers Timothy Simmons of Ogdensburg, Raymond Simmons & his wife Nancy of Constantia, NY and Roger Simmons & his wife Barb of Savannah, GA; sisters Jane Zanker & her husband Clark of Heuvelton, Colleen Spriggs & her companion Gordon Turon of Parsons, TN and Tina Willard of Ogdensburg; along with many nieces, nephews & cousins.
A brother William Simmons predeceased him in 2005. A grandson Brandon Chase Simmons in 2003.
Walt was born on May 12, 1945 in Ogdensburg NY, a son of the late Ervin “Ray” & Elizabeth (Amo) Simmons. He graduated from Heuvelton Central School and entered the United States Air Force on November 11, 1963. He retired from the Air Force in 1983. He obtained a Master’s Degree from Air Force University and a Bachelor degree in Computer Science from the University of Southern Mississippi. He worked as a Cryptographic Technician for 20 years for the Federal Government, retiring on November 30, 1983.
He was married to Dorothy “Dot” Jenkins on February 17, 1968 in Gulfport, MS, and was a member of the Heuvelton AmVets, a Deacon in the Southern Baptist Church for 30 years, Children’s pastor for 30 years and taught church school at the Cornerstone Wesleyan Church. He was a member of Fresh Start Fellowship Church. He enjoyed working on his land, traveling, running cross country, camping, fishing and hunting.
