Opal Mae Smith, 92, passed away on Wednesday, May 21st,2014, in Grapevine, Texas.

Opal was born on April 5, 1922, in Sasawaka, Oklahoma, to William and Effie Howell.

Opal and her husband, Campbell A. Smith, Smitty, were long-time residents of Odessa, Texas. They loved Silver Stream Camper adventures where Opal’s gregarious personality and infectious laughter engaged all they met.

They were members of the Crescent Park Baptist Church in Odessa. Opal was a member of Eastern Star, Friendship Chapter there, as well.

Opal’s ready smile and warm humor made the job of cashier at Gibson’s a good fit for her.

Opal was preceded in death by her beloved husband of sixty-three years, Campbell, as well as by her four brothers: Ed Howell, William Howell, Jr., Kenneth Howell, and Wayne Howell Gant.

She is survived by her four children: Allen Smith and wife, Paula, Sapulpa, OK; Sue Scott and husband, Nelson, Keller, TX; Cheryl Gill and husband, Bob, Lake Wylie, SC; and Bonnie Bell and husband, Greg, Castle Rock, CO. Her children and their spouses enjoy recounting examples of Opal’s sparkling wit and loving demeanor. She was fiercely loyal to her family.

Opal’s grandchildren attest to Opal’s amazing hugs. She was a dearly cherished grandmother. The grandchildren are Rachel Gillespie, Leah Gajan, Kristin Lasater, Sandra Hansen, Sharon Reynolds, Staci Reynolds, Lindsay Vincent, Robert Gill, Brian Bell, and Harrison Bell.

Her nineteen great-grandchildren were also the recipients of her love for babies, as were her many nieces and nephews.

Honoring her memory, a viewing will be at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Home in Odessa, on Monday, May 26th, from 6:00-8:00 P.M.

Funeral services for Opal will be held in the Frank W. Wilson Funeral Home Chapel at 3:00 on Tuesday, May 27th. The interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.“All who knew and loved Opal will miss her enthusiastic love of family and life.”
