Jo Ann Young Crain, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend died peacefully on Tuesday, September 21, 2010.
Jo Ann was born August 1, 1932, in Davenport, Okla, to Stella Ilah Blaney and Rufus Elmer Young. She began elementary school in Oklahoma but moved to California for 3rd and 4th grades. WWII drew the family to California in search of a job. After the war Jo Ann and her parents returned to Oklahoma, and Jo Ann graduated from Central High School in Oklahoma City in 1950. On August 18th of the same year, Jo Ann married the love of her life, La Don Everett Crain. Their first two children, Gail Ann and Larry Don, were born in Oklahoma City.
In 1956 the young family moved to Odessa, Texas where Don began a 38 year career with Phillips Petroleum. Texas born children, Janet Kay and Jerry Alan were added to the family in Odessa. Jo Ann began her own 28 year career with Southwest 66 Credit Union in 1966. Both Don and Jo Ann retired in 1994.
Don preceded Jo Ann in death in 1996. Several years later Jo Ann reconnected with an Oklahoma friend, Walter Goodner of Eufaula. Their friendship continued even when Jo Ann moved to The Cottages at Chandler Creek in Round Rock, TX, in May 2008.
The family is deeply grateful to all the special women at The Cottages for the more than two years of love and care they provided for Jo Ann. Special thanks also go to Lighthouse Hospice at Altenheim for their care and compassion in Jo Ann’s final days.
Jo Ann is survived by her four children: Gail Pickett (Danny) of Round Rock, Larry Crain (Cindy) of Odessa, Janet Stump (Matt) of Georgetown, and Jerry Crain (Tammy) of Sonora, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 PM, Sunday, September 26th at Hubbard Kelly Funeral Home, 601 N. Alleghaney in Odessa, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Monday, September 27th at Hubbard Kelly Chapel, with Pastor Eric Hartzell of Georgetown, TX, officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
