He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dorothy Faye Greene Jackson; his daughter, Danese Leigh Johnson Walker (Lamont Walker); his son David Lee Jackson III (Sandy Jackson), his sisters Esther Stoker and Vesta Rodgers. He was blessed with five grandchildren—Dorian Johnson, Taivon Walker, Cyrus Walker, Sophia Jackson, Noah Jackson, and three great grandchildren, Zadren Johnson, Adaren Johnson and Willow Johnson. He has a host of loving relatives. His infant daughter, Deralyn Jackson proceeded him in death.
David was born and raised in Dallas, TX by wonderful parents, the late David Lee Jackson and Mrs. Edna Jackson who shaped his life and character. He graduated from Lincoln High School, attended Texas Southern University and was a proud graduate of Bishop College. He received a master’s degree in music education from Sul Ross State University.
Jackson moved to Odessa, where he was the Band Director at Ector High School until his retirement. Under his leadership the Ector High School Band received numerous awards. After retirement he taught music at St. John’s Day School. He touched the lives of thousands through music.
Dorothy was the love of his life. There are no words to describe their love for one another. Walter Hunt introduced them at a graduation ceremony at the Gertrude Bruce Center. They married shortly after. Family was the most important part of their lives. They loved cooking for large family gatherings, traveling, spending time with family and friends and watching their favorite shows together.
David was well known far and wide for his catfish dinners. If you ever had it, you couldn’t help coming back for more. Even the toddlers lined up for seconds.
Jackson was a faithful member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church for over 40 years where David directed the choir. He was a Steven Minister, a faithful senior warden, leader of the Lenten pancake supper.
David was an avid golfer. He was a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.
He shared his love of music with his family. Both his daughter and son played in band and orchestra. His son David followed his Dad into a career in music. They often collaborated on music together. He was the band director for his in-laws, an interesting relationship for sure. His nieces and nephews have fond
memories of attending summer band camps. He made sure students that needed instruments had them, even taking care of the cost himself.
