Alex Ogilvy III

Alex “Buck” Ogilvy III, 77, went to be with his Lord on September 29, 2010 after a courageously fought battle with cancer. Buck was born July 18, 1933 in Baird, Texas to Alex Ogilvy and Juanita Bowlus Ogilvy. Buck’s mother died when he was very young. His family moved to Odessa in 1937 where his father met and married Bonnie Birdwell who became his beloved mother. Buck is preceded in death by his parents, sister Bertha Joyce Ogilvy, mother and father-in-Law Ruth and Evart White, sister-in-law Barbara White Moughon and daughter-in-law Cynthia Ogilvy. After serving in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955, he returned to Odessa and married his wife of 55 years Judy White Ogilvy.

Buck attended Texas Tech University and graduated in 1958 with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. Buck joined his Father at Ector County Abstract & Title Co. in 1958 and served as its President until his death. He took great joy in getting to celebrate the company’s 100th anniversary this year as one of Ector County’s oldest businesses. He was a founding member of Asbury United Methodist Church, and later returned to the church in which he grew up, First United Methodist.

Buck was a member of the Texas Land Title Association and served as a regional Vice President. He was a member of the Odessa Chamber of Commerce and served on many committees including the Odessa Jaycees, The Odessa Board of Realtors, The Texas Association of Realtors, Life Member of The Texas Real Estate Political Action Committee, the Commemorative Air Force and the President’s Council of Texas Tech University. He was an Odessa Business Hall of Fame Inductee and received the Community Statesman Recipient for Service in a Profession award from the Heritage of Odessa Foundation. He was currently serving on the board of The Odessa Industrial Development Corporation, and the Historic Preservation Commission. Over many years he supported numerous local projects and charities such as The University of Texas of the Permian Basin Partners Scholarship Fund, Permian Playhouse, Meals on Wheels of Odessa, Junior League of Odessa, Midland-Odessa Symphony and Choral, Globe Theater of the Southwest, Permian Basin Rehabilitation Center, The Crystal Ball Foundation, Texas Tech University Health Science Center, Buffalo Trail Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the Presidential Museum, Ellen Noel Art Museum of the Permian Basin, Main Street Odessa, Odessa College, Ector County Independent School District Education Foundation, Youth Baseball and many others.

Buck is survived by his wife Judy White Ogilvy, sons Mike Ogilvy and wife Sarah, Tim Ogilvy and daughter Judy Withrow and husband Mike of Odessa; grandchildren Christopher, Stephen and Matthew Withrow, Lonnie McComas and wife Brenda, Becky Boone and husband Bill of Midland, and Jamie Davis and husband Chris of Kentucky. Great grandchildren Sarah Ann Bedwell and Amanda Boone of Midland, Austin McComas of Odessa and Cynthia Lynn Davis of Kentucky as well as many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a very special thank you to his Dr. Eugene Wyszynski and Dr. John Doran as well as the entire staff of the CCU Unit and 5th floor of Medical Center Hospital.

There will be a private family burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens Friday Morning with a Celebration of His Life at 2 pm at the First United Methodist Church.
