Robert Patterson Sr.

Reverend Robert Patterson, Sr. was born on December 17, 1939 in Cincinnati, Ohio and began his eternal rest on August 9, 2017. Rev. Patterson was preceded in death by his Mother Myrtle Davidson Patterson McGoogin Fortune, his Father Roosevelt Patterson his brothers Arnett Patterson, William Patterson, James Miquelo McGoogin, and Larry McGoogin. His sisters Mary Frances Patterson Johnston, Ruby Patterson Hawkins, Nora Jean Patterson Dent, Myrtle Patterson Timmons, and Eve McGoogin Snell-Katibi. He is survived by his brothers Roosevelt Patterson, Edward Patterson, and Oscar Patterson, and sister Delores Patterson Emery

After serving proudly in the United States Marine Corps, from 1961 to 1970, completing a tour of duty in Vietnam and retiring with the rank of Staff Sergeant. Rev. Patterson lived in Oceanside, CA for 51 years. His life reads like a road map, he was a Vietnam Veteran, a Graduate of San Diego State University (Class of 1975), earning the Degree of Bachelor of Arts in Applied Arts and Sciences Social Welfare. He has served as a Cable Television News Reporter, (Oceanside, CA.) Host of “Behind the Truth”, Employment Counselor Specialist, (Operation SER), and Counselor-Testing Specialist, Metropolitan Area Advisory Committee (MAAC). Coordinator of Manpower, CETA Area Training Center (at Palomar Community College), Transitional Assistance Program Instructor (TAP) State of California and was Director of Personal Affairs (Camp Pendleton, CA) Department of Defense, Dept. Of Veterans Affairs, State of Calif. EDD and coordinated the first ever Sickle Cell Anemia Testing in Oceanside, just to name a few of his many accomplishments.

Rev. Patterson met his Wife, Linda, while attending Walker Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church. They were married for 42 years and have two wonderful children: Shawn W. Patterson and Fanon R. Patterson. Rev. Patterson also has three loved sons from a former marriage: Robert Patterson Jr., Floyd William Patterson, and Andre’ Eric Patterson. He always supported and encouraged his children’s academic and athletic pursuits. At an early age Robert confessed a belief in Christ. He was inspired by the Christian teachings of his foster father the Reverend Council Harris while growing-up. Robert was called to the ministry during his membership at Walker Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, under the Pastoral guidance of Reverend Timothy O. Coston, Sr. where he was licensed as a minister on August 24, 1997.

As a member of Walker Chapel AME Church he served in various capacities, from the Usher Board to the Steward and Trustee Boards. He taught both Sunday school and Bible Study and served in each department to the best of his abilities

Robert has gone home, resting comfortably and peacefully with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We love and miss him dearly. His memory and spirit are cherished by his beloved wife, Linda, five sons, Shawn (Francine,) Fanon (Rene), Robert Jr., Floyd and Rev. Andre’ (Rev. Dargenae’). His brother’s Roosevelt, Oscar, and Edward his sister Delores, and nephews Robert (Dulce), Michael (Donna), and Leroy. His niece Karen and grand -nephews Miles, and Kyle, and a host of relatives and friends. Robert is and will continue to be fondly remembered for the special relationship he shared with family and friends.
