Retha Dean Hiscox

Retha Dean Hiscox, age 91, passed away peacefully October 6, 2022 in Laughlin, NV. She was born as Retha Dean Gist on August 16, 1931 in Seminole, Oklahoma to Jesse D and Mary Violet Gist. The Gist family moved to the Imperial Valley during the Great Depression when she was 5 years old. She graduated from Brawley Union High School. She met her husband while she was in Nursing School. He was in the Navy. She married John Angus Hiscox in 1952 who preceded her in death in 2013.

She was a mother to four children. John Angus Hiscox Jr. who resides in Santa Cruz, CA, Michael David Hiscox deceased in 1993, Lora Lynn Hiscox who resides in Laughlin, NV and Mary Jane March, deceased in 2006.

For over 30 years Retha worked as a Registered Nurse. She worked in Brawley, CA and Escondido, CA mostly in Convalescent Hospitals. She loved nursing and caring for people.

She cared for people her whole life. She was like a “mother” to her children’s friends. She was a good listener and her smile was genuine and contagious. Her life was a living example of how to treat others “be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you”.

She loved to be around her family to “Love on Them” She is survived by 5 grandchildren; Tammy Gurule who resides in Vista, CA, Michael White who resides in Branson, MO, Sara Matley who resides in Folsom CA, Sandy Sly who resides in San Mateo, CA, Shelly Heil who resides in Hayward, CA. She is also survived by 11 great grandchildren all in CA; Savannah Gurule who resides in Los Angeles, Trent Gurule who resides in Vista, Hannah, Eli and Ezra Matley who reside in Folsum, and Leah, Becca, Emma, Caleb and Jacob Sly who reside in San Mateo and Nathan Heil who resides in Hayward.
