Born in Brooklyn, NY on June 10, 1934, to the late Mary and Hyman Shapiro. After the passing of his father and his brother, his family moved to Jersey City NJ, before settling in Vineland, NJ where he finished high school. After graduating, he enlisted in the Navy from 1952-1956 and served as a petty officer second class. Upon completion of his Navy tour, he and his family relocated to Belmar, NJ.
Stanley worked full-time in the family business, Howard Lyn Shoes, in Asbury Park, NJ, while also attending Monmouth College at night; he graduated with a BA in History in June 1961. In June 1960 he married Carole (nee) Sherman and ultimately settled in Ocean Township, NJ. Upon graduating from college, he started working as a Claims Examiner for the State of NJ. A few years later, Stan returned to the children’s shoe store, Howard Lyn full-time; he became a partner at the shoe store, where he stayed until 1978, when Carole and Stan opened a Tupperware distributorship in Neptune, NJ (later moving it to Wall Township, NJ). In 1992 they sold their business, and Stan went back to work for the State of NJ, again as a Claims Examiner, until his retirement in his mid 70’s.
An avid reader, learner, and storyteller, Stanley loved to talk to people; no one stayed a stranger once they started a conversation with him. He enjoyed reminiscing about his family and past, as well as spending time with his children and grandchildren. In addition, he led a life of service, serving on the initial board of the Jewish Family Services of Asbury Park, NJ, as well as the past president of B’nai Brith Men. More recently, Stan was an advocate and champion for veterans throughout the state of New Jersey, serving multiple times as Post Commander for the Jewish War Veterans Ocean/Asbury Park Post 125, and also as the Council Commander for Monmouth and Ocean Counties. One of his favorite activities was raising funds through Poppy Sales, as well as participating in Memorial and Veteran’s Day Commemorative Events.
Stan was predeceased by his parents, his older sister Ruth Wolf and younger sister Jean Frank, as well as his brother-in-law Alan Sherman and sister-in-law Meryl Sherman.
Surviving is his beloved wife of 61 years, Carole Shapiro; his children Dr. Jonathan Shapiro and wife Toby of Irvine, CA; Beth (Shapiro) Settje and husband Brandon of Somers, CT; grandchildren Ethan Settje and Maggie Settje, sister-in-law Judy Sherman, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services* will held on Wednesday, April 6th at 12 pm at Bloomfield-Cooper in Ocean, NJ, followed immediately by the burial, at Beth Israel in Woodbridge, NJ.
