It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Walter “Wally” Henry Pojman, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, who passed away at the age of 82 on September 25, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Oak Park, Illinois, on January 21, 1942, to the late Walter and Ruth Pojman, Wally was known for his faith, generosity, and sense of humor. After graduating from Proviso East High School and attending Wright Jr. College, he built a successful career with Illinois Bell/AT&T, where he worked for 38 years before retiring at the age of 59.
Wally was a loving husband to his wife of 61 years, Phyllis, and a dedicated father to his six children: Kyla (Richard) Mennecke, Kelly (Dan) Irmen, Karyl Adams, Laurel (Eric) Reddish, Walter (Andrea) Pojman, and Jodi (Rob) Tarver. He was also a proud grandfather to 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his immediate family, Wally was a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews, always ready to offer his wisdom, humor, and a helping hand. He cherished hosting family gatherings, where he delighted in backyard barbecues, volleyball, softball games, horseshoes, and sharing delicious meals.
Wally’s family meant everything to him, and he never missed an opportunity to support his children’s and grandchildren’s activities. His warm smile, easygoing nature, and steadfast presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
In his spare time, Wally enjoyed gardening and traveling. He especially loved BBQs with family, tending to his garden, and taking trips to places like Hawaii and Alaska. He was always up for a good game of dominoes and enjoyed walking the scenic paths of Morton Arboretum. His love of gardening, along with his strong work ethic, was passed down to his children, who will continue to cherish his guidance.
Wally is survived by his beloved wife, Phyllis; his children, Kyla, Kelly, Karyl, Laurel, Walter, and Jodi; his sister, Ruthann Krey; and numerous nieces, nephews, and close friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Ruth.
A celebration of Wally’s life will be held on Friday, October 11, 2024, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Chapel Hill Gardens West, 17w201 Roosevelt Road, Oakbrook Terrace, IL 60181. A service will begin at 5:00 PM. Friends and family are welcome to gather in remembrance of him.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to a charity of your choice.
