On February 26, 2016, with his family surrounding him, Michael Washington made his transition home to be with the Lord. Michael, affectionately known as “Big Mike” was born on September 7, 1953 in Chicago, Illinois, to the proud parents of Tommy and Virginia Washington. Both parents, and his stepfather Frank McBride, preceded him in death. Mike, the youngest of three boys, was also preceded in death by the eldest Tommy Jr. then Larry.
Mike accepted the Lord at an early age and was baptized at New Testament Baptist Church in Chicago. During his early educational years at Shoop Elementary and Morgan Park High School, he developed a passion for basketball where he played many positions for Morgan Park’s Varsity Team. Upon graduation, Mike attended several state colleges before accepting a full scholarship to the University of Illinois, Urbana, IL. While at the University of Illinois, he further developed his basketball skills so much so that he explored many professional opportunities within the United States and abroad. Mike spent two years in Belgium playing pro basketball before returning to the states.
In 1976, Mike married his childhood love Diane. From their union they were blessed with two exceptional children Nicole and Michael-Phillip Jr.
For 39 wonderful years together they stayed true to their vows. They did ‘EVERYTHING’ together, from travelling around the world to enjoying many family vacations. Mike and Diane enjoyed life to the fullest until Mike said ‘Good Bye’ to his true love.
In 1979, Mike began his career with the Illinois State Police. Throughout his 27 year career, he continued to embrace and honor his uniform proudly until his retirement in 2006. During his retirement years, Mike enjoyed doing his three favorite things, Bowling, Bid-Whisk, and Da Bears.
Mike’s family was his greatest joy. He took pride in the many accomplishments his children achieved as teenagers, and today as phenomenal adults and parents. While his health failed, he always managed a big smile when he thought about time spent with his grandchildren.
Mike was blessed with a host of special friends from many walks of life. He remained connected with his childhood friend Lonnie, along with his bowling team and friends he vacationed with. But let us not forget his beloved ‘Boyz4Life’. Mike’s friends gave him much happiness, he was proud to call all of them ‘FRIENDS’.
Michael’s love will continue to live on in the hearts of his wife Diane, daughter Nicole, and son Michael-Phillip. Michael’s legacy will thrive through his grandchildren Aniya and Michael-Phillip II "Deuce". He leaves to mourn, sisters Phyllis and Beverly; mother-in-law Effie; sister-in-laws Sharon, Yvonne (Kenny) and Chiquita and a host of other relatives and friends.
