Grandma's Eulogy
We are all gathered together today for a very special reason, and there is NO prouder honor bestowed upon me then to stand before all of you; to share reflections and memories of the life of an Angel, who hid her wings from us all, Mary Agnes Olson;

• Cousin
• Aunt
• Wife
• Daughter-in-law
• Sister-in-law
• Mother-in-law
• Grandmother
• Great Grandmother
• Great, Great Grandmother
• And Most Importantly Mother
On January 28, 1934, Mary Agnes O'Brien was born into this world on the North side of Chicago.  
This clearly explains grandma's love and loyalty for a team, who make-up excuses why they lose almost every game, the stinky Cubs.  
Grandma attended “Our lady of Victory” school on the Northwest side of Chicago.  One day after Kindergarten, Grandma walked home with a new friend she made at school.  The aroma of Blueberry pie filled the air the closer and closer they got to Mary's home.  Mary did not notice the smell; as she was too excited for her family to meet her new friend.  Her new friend, however, noticed the smell though; Mary's new friend was Father Freeman and boy did he love Blueberry pie.
Father Freeman, from that very 1st day he walked Mary home, watched over Mary and her family.  He bought Grandma and her sisters their first bicycle; it had big orange tires.  He also purchased the O'Brien family their first TV, which was round.  Father Freeman would take the O'Brien children for rides in his car, which was always a special treat; since they did not have a car of their own.  He would take Mary, Jeanette, Johnny, and Helen to get ice cream with only one very special wish; All the O'Brien children had to sing loud and proud “I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream.”
Father Freeman had deeply cared, watched over, helped, and became lifelong friends with the O'Brien and Olson family for a reason.  Did Father Freeman see a glimpse of Mary's wings through her blonde curly locks that day he walked home with Grandma from Kindergarten?  
Angels walk beside us every day; Father indeed had to know this.       
After World War II, Grandma and her family moved to the Southside of Chicago, which is also the White Sox's territory, NOT the CUBS. 
Every night, Mary and Jeanette would have to go outside and shovel coal into buckets to put into the full size furnace in their kitchen to stay warm throughout the night.  Grandma never complained or spoke a bad word.  Grandma made the best out of everything in life.  
Grandma loved to go to dances with her many girlfriends, and dance the evening away.
Mary's childhood life was not sugar coated, and at times was incredibly difficult.   Yet at the same time, it was incredibly, beautiful, honoring, respectful, entertaining, and enjoyable.   
My Grandma was the most strikingly gorgeous child and woman ever seen, on the outside, as well as, the inside.  
Grandma's outside appearance was absolutely, unbelievably, stunningly gorgeous.  Grandma had the most beautiful blonde hair with locks of curls, big beautiful oval shaped eyes that were crystal-clear blue-hazel color, the cutest perfect button nose, her high rosy toned cheekbones, flawless complexion, her beautiful lips and the most beautiful smile you have ever seen; that would light up an entire room.  She was perfect in every possible way.
Mary was the spokes model for Carrot Juice, thanks to her Uncle Stanley. He could not have chosen a more unbelievable beautiful Carrot Juice girl.  
Grandma, my love for you is and always will be, unconditional.  I still am not going to ever drink or even take a small sip of some carrot juice!  The thought alone “YUCK!” makes me sick.  Of-course, I can hear you in my head and picture looking at your beautiful face, as you make that snap sound with your tongue  
“Tanya, you will never know if it's good or bad unless you take a small sip.”  I would try just for you Grandma and only for you. 
Mary's sisters, Jeanette and Helen said everyone called and said “Mary the Angel. Has the patience's of a Saint and could do no wrong ever.”
Jeanette and Helen, sisters share a very special friendship that lasts a lifetime.  Sisters share laughter and wipe one another's tears away.  One sister is equivalent to 1000 friends.  Having a sister that always was and is an Angel is indescribable.  I suppose you are wondering, as we all are, just where and how Mary hid her wings.
Mary was soft-spoken, generous, sweet, strong, intelligent, never yelled or raised her voice, never judged anyone or seen the bad in anyone or decisions they made.  She never spoke ill of others under any condition. Mary was kind, honest, and loyal; never favored one more then another and made everyone single person feel like they were her favorite without question.  The love she shared with you was unconditional.  Grandma's heart was pure gold. 
I can easily see why, my grandfather, Kenneth Wayne Olson, fell madly in love with, my grandmother, Mary Agnes O'Brien, at first site.  
Mary Agnes was flawless.
Mary Agnes O'Brien was 16 years old and Kenneth Wayne Olson was 18 years old when they went to Crown Point, Indiana and eloped.  Mary Agnes O'Brien now became Mary Agnes Olson, and carried that name for 63 years.  Mary and Wayne shared all their wishes and dreams together and made every one of them come true.  They were and are each other's soul mate with the most beautiful unconditional love.
Wayne and Mary Olson had 5 beautiful children; Jimmy, Kenny, MaryLou, Tommy, and Johnny.
• Jimmy, the moment a child is born, the mother is also born. The mother never existed before that moment you came into this world. A mother is something absolutely new and beautiful to become. You made your mother become a “Mother.” You outgrew her lap, but never her heart.  Your mother instilled in you to stand tall with your head held high at all times, be strong through the difficult and easy times in life.  That one small compliment can mean the world and one small comment can break a heart.  Never speak ill or judge anyone, as you are and always will be the better person, as your mother raised you to be. 

• Kenny, you are just like your mother by everything you do.  Your love for others is truly unconditional; which everyone feels when they are around you.  
I am sure your mother knew, on more than one occasion; when she would find you hiding in the back of the station wagon, as she leaving to go to the store and had to tell you,   
“Kenny, what are you doing?  Get out of the car. No one is going to steal me away from you!”  
Your mother taught you how to drive and even though it took 3 times before you passed the test; at that time, your mother instilled her patience, strength, and loyalty in you.  
How your mother did that is a truly a secret gift, because I do not think many of us now, would get in a car with you after they just heard about this story.  
You never have outgrown your mother's lap, no matter how big you have become, but your mother knew this is where you truly belonged.  
At the age of 5 years old until 16, you were your mother's follower; 17 years old to 60, you were your mother's protector; and today you are a carbon copy of your mother.  
Giving your son a skill is better than giving him one thousand pieces of gold.  
Your mother instilled almost everything of her inside of you and we all know.

• MaryLou, the 1st moment your mother held you in her arms.  She was ecstatic and felt so blessed; 
She could not believe that she now had a beautiful baby girl; which brought a new color into the Olson home, pink, of-course, which is the very 1st favorite color of every little girl.  
Your mother helped you take your first steps, picked you up when you stumbled and kissed your scratched knees, as you had request.  You truly believed your mother's touch and kiss would take anyone's pain away, which was correct in every way.  
You are your mother's treasure, her only little princess.  You loved to pretend and play like every little princess.
There is no way you could ever forget, the day you and your mother were driving alone; and you asked her, if you two could pretend to be rich, for just one day; of-course, your mother said yes, so you both rolled up the windows on that one hot summer day.  This only lasted a short, short time before you said,   “Boy, Mom it's HOT in here!  I don't want to pretend to be rich anymore, not today or any day.”  
Your mother smiled and agreed, as you both rolled down the windows, your mother said to you,   “We truly are the rich ones because we are the ones with the fresh air blowing on our face.”  
MaryLou, your mother protected you from harm while instilling her strength in you. She supported you on your decisions and answered every single call you made to her; even if it was 5, 6, 7, heck maybe even 10 times a day.  
Like Mother, like Daughter is so very true. Your mother raised you into the most beautiful, respectful, proper lady that you are today.  A mother-daughter relationship is the most difficult for anyone to understand; this is due to the relationship you always shared together becoming something much more, than either of you ever knew, a new relationship of being one another's very, best girlfriend.
  
• Mary gave birth her 4th beautiful child on December 23, 1957.  Mary was blessed with another son, whom she named, Thomas David Olson.  
Mary instilled in her son, Tommy, which we all hold dear in our hearts; was his kindness, compassion, generosity, strength and the most amazing ability to make dozens upon dozens of individuals feel like he or she was the most important person in the world to him.
Tommy loved his mother and thought she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen.  Tommy knew his mother was stronger than Superwoman was and that his mother did not need a cape to have incredible strength.  As Tommy, was the only individual that seen his mother's Angel wings and how his mother hid them so well.  Tommy and his mother have a very special secret that they shared together on February 2, 2009
Mary Agnes lost her son Tommy February 4, 2009, which broke her apart.  
She missed, Tommy, dearly; however, she always knew he was OK.  
For, Mary Agnes was a true walking Angel among us and protected her loved ones, all so well. 
  
• Johnny, you did not follow your father or your 4 big brother's footsteps to the man you wanted to be.  Your mother instilled in you, that you must follow your own heart and your own dreams.  What an extremely, perfect man you have become by being listening to every word your mother spoke to you and truly soaked in everyone.  
All the things you have accomplished in life this far, your mother was so extremely proud of her perfect baby boy.  
How truly lucky you most feel; as you always had the pleasure and honor of having the most flawless woman in the world, your mother, as companion to so many countless number of events.  
If anyone was looking for your mother, everyone always knew exactly where she would be; without any question or doubt.  Just look for Johnny, usually the tallest man in the room; because that is exactly where your mother was, right next to you.
As a child your head, always rested on your mother's lap, as she gently rubbed the side of you face while you were watching TV, sitting around a campfire, or talking with family and friends.  
The Holiday's you and your mother shared together all alone, is something no else can say, that they had been blessed with the special privilege you had with your mother.  
Johnny you were spoiled by your mother in so many ways.  I personally can say this and I know it's very true, because I have witnessed it for 39 years. 
At Christmas time, you always had more presents then me.  Your mother's, favorite grandCHILD and you were an adult.  
Johnny when you look in the mirror what do you see?  I hope you see, what we all do in you, which is an exact replica of your mother because that is exactly who you are.
   
Your mother was perfect in every possible way.  The way she made scrambled eggs for dinner, seem like such a simple treat.  There were three homemade meals every day that your mother made from scratch.  Your mother made your childhood the most enjoyable, and made every day fun.  Your mother has raised you into the most extraordinary adults that you are today.  She instilled only the best in each of you inside and you.
On May 12, grandma gave a piece of paper to me, with a very special message on it stating, “DO NOT SHARE till the time as come.”  I think the time is now, Grandma.    
“Dear My Beautiful Children, if I could give you all one last gift.  I would give you the ability to see yourselves through my eyes, only then would you realize how special you all are to me.  I love you and always am right with you.  Love, Mom”

Mary was blessed with three daughter-in-laws, Sherri, Sharon and Kathy; and one son-in-law, Ron.  No one can imagine a more perfect and loving mother-in-law, Mary has been to each one of you.
Mary, I wonder what you thought when you gave birth to your children.  As tears flowed down in joy those days, for the treasure God had brought.  When you looked into your baby's eyes and held there tiny hands, did you know how thankful we all would be.  For your boys you made into men, for your only girl you made into a woman.  No child's grows without a mother's care.  Teaching them and loving them.
Mary always was there; accepting and loving each of us, as we were Mary's own children, as well.  Now I look into the eyes of the children you raised to be, your child who stands above the crowd who is my husband and wife.  It is your eyes that I see, those steely eyes of strength and hope.  The eyes filled of love, faithfulness, and wisdom that Mary shared with each of one of us.  Our mother-in-law, we want to take this moment and thank you; for the children, that you have shared and for allowing us to love your perfect pieces of artwork, your children.    
The simplest toy, one that even the youngest child can operate is called a grandparent.  We are truly blessed grandchildren.
Grandma was blessed by her 5 children giving her 14 grandchildren.  Grandma's 14 grandchildren gave her 17 great grandchildren, and Grandma's great granddaughter gave her with one great, great, grandson.
There was magic in our grandmother's touch and sunshine in her smile.  There was love in everything she did to make our lives worthwhile.  We all found hope and courage just by looking in Grandma's eyes.  Her laughter was a source of joy, her words warm and wise.  There was a kindness and compassion found in her embrace.  Shining down from Heaven above, we now see the glow of our Grandmother's face

The Olson Family stays together!  We are so very lucky to have one another; not one of us could ever replace by another person.  Your Mother and our Grandmother; raised a family, The Olson's, that stinks through thick and thin.  For now and even after the end, we must stand tall.  Plus, we can't upset Grandma or, Grandpa will definitely come down and strike you upside the head.
As I have thought about Grandma's life and the lives of many others I have known who are no longer here; I have come to realize more of what it means to live.  What we frequently recall about those who are no longer here with us is not the years they spent alive but the living that they did.  When you stop to think about the things people talk about when reminiscing about friends and family that have passed away, it is usually about the fully human things that made them vibrantly alive.  The risk they took to show us whom they truly were, while not allowing themselves to be crippled by the fear of judgment or disappointment.  We remember the colorful stories that illuminated their unique identities.  Those special traits which were then and will forever remain unabashedly beautiful!
I've never been good with goodbyes, so I'll offer these closing thoughts, in the hope that they capture and help each of you keep the spirit of Mary Agnes Olson alive in your hearts and in your daily actions.

My thoughts and prayers go out to my neighbor and friend, Jim Olson, and his immediate and extended family.  I am deeply sorry for your loss.

My condolences to the Olson family on the loss of Mary. She will be remembered warmly. She was very blessed to have been surrounded by her loving family often, and especially recently during her last days.

Grama, I love and miss you. I remember all the fun times we had together,you will always be in my heart and mind.You are now my stars in the sky,and the sun in my eyes. Grandma, with the gift of years comes the treasure of knowing that there are many who love you dearly. The memories you've made with us will last forever. The tenderness you've shared with us will never fade. The most wonderful gift you could ever give is the special part of you that now lives in each of us and the truth your love has taught us can only be strengthened by the gift of time. For where the roots grow deep, memories grow forever.

What a beautiful woman she was inside and out...Thank you for everything..Although you will be greatly missed...My greatest hope is you are reunited with your loving husband and my love your son....My thoughts and prayers continue out to all the Olson family and friends of this great family....I don't want  to or cant imagine what you are going thru right now so I will just say I love you all..see you soon...
